Hello,

I have some probs here. I have got a client, and it is a school. So where should I register their .edu domain name?

If anyone knows about this then please let me know.

Thanks.

Really good question. I wouldn't have the foggest idea, but would be interested in hearing where you go to reg. I am curious if there is a federal registry that you have to apply to and what the cost would be for yearly renewing .edu domains.

"EDUCAUSE is not currently charging a fee to applicants and name holders in the .edu domain. Under the terms of the cooperative agreement with the Department of Commerce, EDUCAUSE reserves the right to charge a nominal fee in the future on a cost-recovery basis. Any fees must be approved by the Department of Commerce."

I answered my own question...

It depends on what kind of school you are. You have to be nationally or regionally accredited and offer some kind of degree. Some schools are grandfathered because they got the domain name before the rule changes were implemented.

Take this for example:
http://www.exeter.edu/

Is a private (and somewhat prestigious) high school near me. They don't have the .edu domain name because they are somewhat prestigious or many rich students go there. They were grandfathered.

From Educause:
Institutions that do not already hold a name in the .edu domain are eligible to receive one if they are post-secondary institutions that are institutionally accredited, i.e., the entire institution and not just particular programs, by agencies on the U.S. Department of Education's list of Nationally Recognized Accrediting Agencies.

That should answer most of your questions.

chances are you're not getting it unles syou're a college or a very famous, high level school which your client is probably not since, well, they don't have a .edu yet.

Here are the details.

I don't own a school or anything. It is for a client to whom I am selling my web designing services.

They don't know how to reg a domain name and all. I would have regged teh .com for them but I just spilled out my guts that .EDU would be better and now they want .EDU for their school site.

Now I am losing a nice client and am worried about it.

I searched a lot about this topic and still I am in dark.

Don't know where and how to register it.

Yeah and the school for which I am developing this site is a National (Registered) Government School. It is in India I am talking about. So more probs here if I have to handle the paper work also.

Indian schools are fine. If it's a College then it'll probably get it. If not, as long as they have post-secondary sections and is followed by a big name, like Institute or something, they have a shot.

You can tell them that if they want to have .edu, you charge fees for handling the paperwork, if they want some other goodies, you can do it cheaper, blah blah.

Yeah and got a lesson also to keep quiet and don't spill out my guts when the client is giving me money.

It was me who spoke about .edu (Was not knowing this would be a headache).

Thanks. for helping me out. (To understand this)
