Registering .com.ru domain names

I was looking around for free domain names and found out that .com.ru or .org.ru, .net.ru domains are free to register.

The website is at www.ripn.net

I went to the registration page but they ask for passport details, and all of that info along with the domain info is sent thru email so I'm a bit wary of sending that kind of info thru normal email. I'm particulary worried that someone might intercept the passort details and possibly steal my identity, or is that not possible (the identity theft part)?

Has anyone registered a .com.ru before?

hmmm... but its not a good idea to give out your passport info. Thats how people make fake ones.
