This is the only really free extention globally (.tk is only free when you don't own the domain yourself, whereas .com.ru is free and the domains are owned by the customer)

Not that the extention is that good, but for trying out DNS stuff and such, it may be a nice one. But the registration (via www.ripn.net) requires the customer to provide a copy of ID and such.

Normally I appreciate paperworks for registrations and ownership transfers (see different topic started by me) and I even prefer it over regular transfer systems. But we are now talking about Russia, and in this case I'm not sure if it's reliable. I know, Russia should be all modernised and such, and RIPN is under ICANN control so they cannot just do whatever they want, but on a different forum where com.ru was discussed some people said they didn't feel comfortable about passing ID copies to a Russian company.

I was wondering, is it justified to be concerned (or paranoid?) or is this as reliable as any other registry?

I am not wondering about the value of .com.ru (I realise this will be low, so I ask basically purely out of interest) but I am wondering about the safety of their registry and of passing all sort of personal details to a Russian registry.
If it were UK or USA based, it'd not be an issue and I would even prefer paperworks to be required. But this is Russia... :lala:

Sometimes free has strings attached such as these.

Quite frankly I would not trust US authorities either, they don't really have much regard for privacy (just look at the latest Swift affair or the numerous snoop programs, I don't think Putin listens to the conversation of all his citizens, yet Bush thinks he has the right to).
I can understand you are wary of countries that you do not know but sometimes the wolf is already established within the henhouse...
I'm not sure .com.ru is worth it anyway, even if it's free.
