I've been told that the 'back to general public' at register(dot)com was 60 days from expire date... although the domain I'm after shouldn't be popular so I'm not wanting to spend a bunch of $ on it. Well , it is past the 60 mark and I was told to go to snapnames to get it... is that ethical, they keep it to try to get more $ out of it?

.
So I guess the main question is does ANYBODY know when a domain name goes back to general public from the registrar Register(dot)com ??

Thanks for help

Register.com is partnered with snapnames.com so they "pass" their expiring names to snap, however, if nobody places a backorder for a name they sometimes keep it for themselves.

I missed a certain drop last year as i forgot to backorder it, nobody else backordered it so register.com just kept it, I waited for it to "drop" again this year...no such luck, register.com has just renewed it until 2011

Many registers are just keeping the domains for themselves now, depending on how good they are of course....it sucks but what can you do ?

Clearly this "just keeping any old domain" BS by registrars has to stop! Currently if a domain name hits expired status, registrars are pretty much able to do as they wish with the domain. ICANN needs to set specific rules in place to prevent a registrar from simply "keeping" a domain. If the registrar wins the domain in a public auction, that's fine....

..totally agree with you Yofie but it ain't gonna happen unfortunately, ICANN have no balls or common sense and they're only interested in making more money. :|

call the toll free and demand to speak to the "expired domains department" - they will likely sell it to you.

if they don't, call their legal department and complain - 212-798-9100 roni jacobson general councel

The only problem with having them reg it for me is that it would cost $30 / year , too much if you ask me when I should be able to grab it for less than $10 / year .

Now they state that ICANN is under control of the domain and they are not, they are blaming ICANN for the problem of the redemption period....

Cheers for that, have you done that before ? Do they sell it at backorder price ?

Even if Register.com did actually drop it there are many other private drop catchers working away so there's no guarentee you could ever get it for $10 - You might do but its not the last hurdle if the domain is a good one.

If you win a backorder with snap and the domain is at register.com you can transfer it out to another register before next renewal time, thats what I usually do.

The need to put up that information of when on their website...
ICANN
3.7.5.5 If Registrar operates a website for domain name registration or renewal, details of Registrar's deletion and auto-renewal policies must be clearly displayed on the website.

...
The customer service guy states 30 day grace and 30 redemption ... well it didn't go into redemption until July , some 46 days later , and now they state the redemption period is from 30 to 35 days ,
what a crock...

..
I recommend people stay away from those money grubbing registrars and don't play their backorder game ... I was clearly told that if the registrar likes the name they will keep it without it dropping to the public ... A clear violation of ICANN rules.
