Reg'd ismailax.com - VA Tech related

Spaceship Spaceship
Watch
I was watching tv this morning about the Virgina Tech massacre.
They mentioned a ranting note left by the killer that was signed ismailax.
Also the word ismailax was supposedly tattoed or inscribed in red on the killers arm.
Rightly or wrongly, I registered the name ismailax.com . Don't ask me why. I just instinctively regd it.
Within hours I started receiving phone calls from reporters asking me why I registered the name and if I know what it means. I even got a call from as far away as England (and I am in Texas).
I told them I have no clue what the name means - and that I own hundreds of domain names. One of the reporters even told me that the name had something to do with the Muslim faith. Supposedly Ibrahim, after recieving the truth from Allah, entered a temple in Babylon with an ax and destroyed the stone and wooden idols worshipped by people or something to that effect.
I had no clue when I registered this name that it would cause so much attention.....

As expected my current server hosting would not handle this onslaught of traffic. I am now getting 10's of thousands of hits per hour. I simply can not afford this kind of bandwidth. The name is now parked and any ppc income generated, will be used to pay for server hosting and the building of a informational/memorial website for the victims of this terrible tradgey.

I don't want to sound preachy, but I saw the Chic Trib article too, and was hoping you would do the right thing, but then I saw it was on a PPC landing page and was disappointed.

Be a HERO. Point it here: http://www.vt.edu/tragedy/memorial_fund.php

Why don't you do the right thing and just point the domain name to VT's own victim's fund so that they get all the traffic? Do it as a matter of morals and ethics, and making a good name for domainers worldwide, if your servers won't handle it, park it on the VT's servers. Heck, they may even give you a mention on a plaque somewhere for "doing the right thing." You may even get MORE positive interviews from the media, and your business will get worldwide coverage, if you look like a hero.

You aren't a beginner domainer, that's obvious, so what you do with this domain name traffic and potential revenue can speak volumes for the domain industry, and yourself. Saying you're going to use any income from it and buy a server hosting and set up a victim memorial website will do what? You're using the money to "build a memorial site?" Pay for hosting? You don't HAVE to do that, because the traffic will be better served pointing it to the official VT fund site, and you KNOW THIS.

I'll personally give you $50 for your efforts to just point the domain -- send the traffic to where it should go... I'm sure others will donate something to you to "encourage" you, although they shouldn't have to, you should do it.

By the way, the domain points to a blank page in the Pac Norwest area. Set it up with whoever you need to talk to in order to get it done.. point it here.

Ya, I just read about this on yahoo. Searched google to find out what it meant, but didn't find much info. I also checked ismailax.com and found out it was taken. Didn't know a namepros member reg'd it.

Ismail = the Biblical Ishmael

Ishmael is the Hebrew way of spelling the word. Ismail is the spelling that I believe is used in the Arabic world. Ax could possibly be referring to the axe that was sometimes wielded in the Muslim story by Abraham. That's the connection I am making anyway.

It's the Islamic equivalent to the Biblical story of Abraham and Isaac.

Nice job, Raymond. Nice catch, too. You'll probably pick up something nice for that with all the attention it's getting.

I can't blame you for registering the domain. However if you use this domain in bad faith you will be the biggest asshole in the world. I hope you use it as a tribute site. Do not abuse this chance to at least ease the pain that everyone has felt over the past few days. As much as I believe in free speech, there are situations that warrant at least a conscious. I hope that being a NamePros member, as I highly regard every respected member here, you have the mindset to use this domain name in the most respectful way possible.

Nicely put. I agree with you 100%.

It's surprising how much traffic you can get from the media. Hopefully your memorial site will turn out well - good luck.

In other news:
choseung-hui.com parked personal domain site
cho-seunghui.com parked at a Chinese site
cho-seung-hui.com parked at GoDaddy
choseunghui.com redirected to an official VT Tragedy Site

At six o'clock this morning a news station in Chicago (WGN Radio) called me and asked me if I would do a live on air interview. I turned them down at first, but they were persistant and finally I agreed. The interview went well and Skip O'dell treated me fairly and he didn't try to slam me for regging the name. I explained that I have been registering unique words and phrases for over a year now. I also said that there is no story here. The story should be with all the victims and the horrible incident that happened.

Today has been hetic. I have been receiving phone interviews from around the world.
One of the local CBS affliliates came by my work and I ended up on the local news. I have been getting tons of emails concerning the name. Some are offers, some are supportive and others are ouright hateful. Hopefully all this will calm down, as I just want my normal life back. I told one reporter that if I could go back in time and do it all over I would NOT register this name again :( I had no idea all this would happen...

Wow, what do they actually want to know?

Are they just asking, "Why did you register this domain?" or are they asking what it means, or something else?

I sent you an email after reading about you (I didn't know it was you at the time) online. [email protected] if you want to try and find it in your inbox.

I'm glad that you're putting the revenue generated towards a memorial site, but why not just forward it to a charity right now? Wouldn't now be the most effective time to utilize this targeted traffic?

It seems to me that outright donating the generated money towards a VaTech related charity would be the most efficient solution, along with forwarding the traffic to responsible charities.

Just my 2c.

Regardless, I am impressed that you were the first to get the name. Were I watching the news live, I would have tried myself...

I can not forward the domain or anything. No matter what nameserver I point it to I get:
"This domain has been blocked"
I called Godaddy and they say they have nothing to do with it.
How can this happen? Is Big brother stepping in?

I have found another domain from google (http://www.toyrus.co.uk/) which seems to have the same limits on it. Could it be an ISP thing? Surely it has to be beyond that, but who can do it?

Whoever has blocked the domain, i can understand why, but it's disgusting behaviour regardless.

People always trying to make a buck from others disasters. I Remember 9/11, London bombings etc. People regged domains like crazy. Personally I find it disgusting when people taking advantage of tragedies like this. Their choice though, I wouldn’t do it. Oh well, bad karma I suppose.

Have a good one, hope you make a buck or two.
