I Used Godaddy Appraisal Tool To Check a Domain, Godaddy Registered It.

I never shared this domain with anyone, never told a close friend. Nobody knew about it.

So last week, I used the Godaddy Appraisal tool to check for unregistered domain names. It was among a list of domains to be registered as I had registered a few. This week, I checked and the domain name has been registered by Godaddy.

According to CompleteDNS.com, I checked history and there has been no history of anyone registering the domain name previously, nor has it been dropped ever. This domain name was never on a pending delete list, which means the chances of someone scouting ExpiredDomains.net and stumbling on it is ZERO.

I never used Godaddy to check unregistered domains but I completely forgot this time around because I was running tens of research at a time.

I know they will deny it as usual or simply say nothing, but the records are there to show that I am not the only that has ever experienced this in the industry.

I am just putting this out there for people not to be careless, especially if you are researching a very hot niche.

On a DNS level, it should be noted that for customer domains that delegate DNS to afternic.com nameservers, namefind.com name servers are configured in the authoritative DNS zones of those customer domains, which makes it all quite confusing...

Godaddy always do this, I also experience this problem. They should be professional but unfortunately, they are not behaving like professional company. Disappointed to hear from you too

I had a very similar case.

Registered a domain like best() .com

After few days, someone registered domain from same industry field / close keyword to mine, also as best() .com,
using godaddy for registration.

Don't know what the heck happened, who there saw my name,...

Never. The majority is being lazy or too stupid to even educate themselves about how domains actually work.

They see easy money and go for it...

I don't even blame the younger generation as a lot of old-timers are just as clueless.

All new registrations are both recorded but also scrapped - that's how you get all that spam with any new dns

Some of the free (and paid) services listed on nps can easily harvest search data. As mentioned by someone else above, the ONLY safe place to check and see if a name is taken is by using https://lookup.icann.org

If you trust ICANN... CLI is the way to go, who knows who is (pun intended) harvesting ICANN.org lookup data?
