Regarding transfers...

It's me again...the overposting newbie!

I read a thread today that discussed the ICANN rule of 60 days before a domain may be transferred to a new individual at a different registrar. The thread also mentioned that this is only if transferring to a DIFFERENT registrar (ie. I can transfer my GoDaddy domain to another GoDaddy use with no issues, but GoDaddy to Moniker would require me to have owned the domain for 60 days).

So, my question is basically how this issue is dealt with...specifically with Sedo or private sales. I bet that any sales on NamePros would be easy as we all have accounts at all of the major firms. So, what if I make a Sedo deal and have only owned the domain for a few weeks? Can I communicate inter-registrar transfers? What about selling a domain to an end-user?

I know this may be pretty basic stuff, but I bet there are a few of us newbies that didn't know about this ICANN rule before!

Thanks in advance,

C

transfers within the same registrar are called "pushes." whenever you say transfer, people in the industry will automatically think that you mean from one registrar to another, whereas a push is always internal.

if you're dealing with a private deal, then the other person can always create an account at godaddy for free, and then you can push the domain to their account. for sedo, you can try contacting someone who may be handling the escrow... i'm not sure how messy it may get, though.

Thanks shockie! With the ease of creating free accounts I don't imagine that this is something I should be too concerned about. Would you say this is correct?

correct. most domainers will have an account at godaddy already, and non-domainers are likely to have heard of godaddy and will create an account there.

Keep in mind that as a rule a push is possible for gTLDs like .com/.net etc
Usually pushes are not possible for ccTLDs.
If you were to sell a .ca for example the process to change ownership would be completely different.
