Recovering a domain from an unresponsive reseller

What is the best method for trying to recover control of a domain you own from an unresponsive reseller?

I have tried contacting the main registrar but they have told me I need to get it pushed from the reseller.

I cant push it because the reseller no longer has a domain management backend. And I cant pull it because I cant get an EPP code for the domain due to the same reason.

Thanks for any advice.

You do not need EPP code to push a name. EPP is required to transfer a name from one registrar to another.

Who is the registrar?

Without knowing that info, there's no way to really help.

As for not needed an EPP code for pushes - technically, Jawed is correct.

However, some registrars, such as eNom, doesn't allow pushes from some of their larger resellers - in such instances, requiring the registrant to do a "transfer" with a valid EPP code even though the domain isn't technically being transferred anywhere, but rather is being pushed within the registrar's own system.

I can only pull (ie transfer) as the reseller no longer has any domain management tools. When I try this an EPP is requested, which I cannot get due to the unresponsive reseller.

Registrar is Enom. It needing to be "Pushed within the registrar's own system" sounds accurate, but the main issue is I cant get a EPP from the reseller.

eNom is pretty good dealing with these matters ...

http://www.enom.com/help/

First, even though it seems redundant, click the "Find Your Domain Provider" and see what reseller name it brings up - may be different than what you think it is and/or will bring up a different support email address that may yield better results.

If all reseller info provided is the same as who you've already been contacting, then click the "Contact us to submit a support ticket".

Be sure to include your domain name, reseller name (as exactly shown after performing the step in the paragraph above), and your request - keep the ticket very simple, since eNom, from what I recall, outsources their support offshore ... ie. "I need the domain UNlocked and the EPP code for transfer out" - don't go into detail about pushing, etc (If no timely response after say 24 hours, CALL eNom regarding the issue) ...

Also, reason is that transfer out may ultimately be your only viable alternative if the reseller is defunct, since eNomCentral (the catch-all for domains not under a reseller) may not be suitable for your needs / costs much more; transferring out is likely your best option.

Here are some more details to hopefully make the problem as clear as possible to anyone who might be able to offer any advice:

The current registrar is "eNom, Inc."

  • I go to enomcentral to try to pull it over
  • I go to the Transfer A Domain option
  • I get message "If the domain requires an authorization key, you will have to obtain it from the current registrar."
  • Below that an Authorizarion Key box appears next to the domain with "Required" written in red next to it

So enom is the registrar that is requesting an authorization code (ie one I'd need to get from the reseller). I cant get that because the reseller no longer has any domain management tools, and they are unresponsive despite persistance attempts to contact them over lengthy period.

I have contacted enom themselves and they confirmed I needed to get hold of the "registrar" (ie the reseller) in order to push the domain to the them. Obviously I explained to them that enom was in fact listed as the "resistrar" already, but that didnt alter their reply. I still needed the current "registrar" (reseller) to either push it or authorize the transfer.

Keyword is "Transfer Out" - once you indicate you seek to transfer it out to another registrar totally unrelated to eNom, such as GoDaddy, eNom itself must unlock the domain and provide you the EPP Authcode within a timely manner (as in within about 5 calendar days).

To clarify, you will need to contact eNom support, but when doing so, explain you need that info because you are transferring out. That forces eNom itself to act and handle the situation properly.
