I was recently contacted by a 500person private domestic corporation named DSSI Networks. My company is also named DSSI but we recently were able to snatch up dssi.net using snapback. Since we have not built our business around dssi.net, we are considering selling it to the corporation.

Here is the information I have collected so far.
The Chief Operations Officer of the company sent me a FEDEX Next Day Air package containing a 1 page printed letter explaining his interest in my domain dssi.net. The letter had no folds or creases, was very clean and on DSSI letterhead. It was signed in ink by the COO.

You may wonder why this is important, but I think it helps me determine his true interest and professional desires.

The company interested in the domain is a domestic, privately held corporation of 500 partners (each employee is a partner.)
After contacting the COO regarding his interest, his initial offer for the domain was $5k. This makes me believe he is willing to go somewhat higher.

I need some help determining the value of my domain because I feel it is worth more then the offer, but I don't want to scare him away with a figure that is too high, because my department could really use the money to finance some new equipment.

Please help.
Jim

Hi Jim,

You're in an excellent position. You've got a great domain with an obvious demand. I would counteroffer with $10k and stick to that price. That would be a fair price for both parties.

Best of luck, let us know how it goes.

Just for my personal benefit, was the homework I did on the buyer worthwhile information? I have never been in a position to sell one of my domains, so I just collected info that seemed pertinent.

Yes, absolutely. From your research, you know that you can make a counteroffer with a little more confidence. It's easy to see that the name has value to this company.

BTW, is this the same DSSI on Nasdaq?

I agree with RJ TOTALLY on this one. Odds are they will think 10k is either Very worthwhile, and a bargain to them, or, they will counter back with 7.5

If the later, then I would say um and ahh, verbally or in writing, expressing that this is potentially loosing business for your own company called DSSI. Therefore, they may well understand and go slightly higher and it also removes the "WOW, i want 5k".

I think it's now down to psychology.

good luck and welcome to NP's. Nice to see some domain buyers are alive :)

Jim: is this the DSSI group out of Michigan with a 2nd remote office in Alabama? Also, as posted, do you know what their "current" url/web address is?

Nice $5K "beginning" offer as I see it.. could go much higher..
Keep us posted!

if it is the DSSI (Data Systems & Software Inc.) which is stock quoted 5k is too low

To be on the stock market means your not small.
500 partners?
5k would probably just outfit a basic office for a few partners.

You should explain to them you are not a domain speculator, you have this name for your own company. And in the next 10 years no one knows how important the internet may be. Therefore you would not be willing to release this name for 5k. ask them to give another offer. they will dont worry.

dont give them a price . this is important. After reading most of the domain name arbritation disputes, usualy the main reason someone loses a name is because he registered in bad faith. and gave a price for sale.

You must put up a website (even a simple basic 3page) and make sure you have the required trademarks. never give a price to them.

if you use the above example they will come back with a better offer. You will also look more proffessional. Otherwise wait. every year the domain will become more valuable to them.

im thinking they will offer you 15-20k

Just remember one thing. It's easier to go down in price if they reject your counter offer then it is to go up, so always start with a high one.

Like RJ said, I think asking 10k would be smart.

Good luck! I hope you get over and above what you're expecting.

I wanted to thank everyone for their input on my situation. I am pleased to say that we sold the domain for $8k after going back and forth for a while.

While the domain is quite convenient and we could have definitely used the probable type-ins, the buyer agreed to provide us a linkback for users searching for our company as part of the deal.

Thanks for the help NamePros!

Congratulations! I agree that you should counter offer for $10,000, but even 5K is great. Good job!
