Two companies have rebranded to .xyz
Here is a little about them:

Tempdrop.xyz

This startup from Israel used to call Temp-drop.com their main web address, but now they’ve dropped the hyphen and rebranded to Tempdrop.xyz. Try searching “temp drop” or “tempdrop” on Google and you’ll notice that Tempdrop.xyz ranks first!

Engage.xyz

Originally on a subdomain, Engage started off with Engage.IHS.org, made the move to ThinkEngage.com, and most recently, to Engage.xyz.

Rebranding???

Can a start up really rebrand? To rebrand, you would first have a notable entity, time, and investment into one image and then change it up.
Never heard of Tempdrop myself. They are dropping a hyphenated name... not really a big push for them. I am going to assume that the "GOOGLE" search competition for Temp Drop or Tempdrop is very low. It is not on my radar of things to look up.

With that being said... the ENGAGE company. I think you said it all in your post here.
They started as a SUB domain.... and then to a third tier .COM... and finally landed on an exact fit domain in the XYZ extension.

Just thinking out loud here... but if your source is the XYZ extension (its self) and that is the BEST THAT THEY CAN PROVIDE... there are underlining issues there.

Just my thoughts but thank you for posting that.

Cheers

Tempdrop.xyz is a terrible name. Equally terrible to temp-drop.com in my opinion.

td.xyz would be nice or temp.xyz or drop.xyz but tempdrop.xyz sounds like it's not a legitimate company. :D

tempdrop.com would be perfect though. They can't even afford to buy that? How can they afford to run a service for their customers??

While premium gTLD's can be devastingly effective for branding, .xyz as a generic "rebranding" play is a tough one because the extension doesn't mean anything, unless of course your company is called alphabet and you claim ABC.XYZ.

General usually means "nothing specific".. .xyz means "nothing specific", happens to be the last 3 characters of the english alphabet, and English is the most recognized language, so .xyz is fine for branding and actually pretty unique and the point of it is that it doesn't mean anything :)
