Exclusive: Reality.TV is AFV Sans Saget
Posted: 24 Jan 2008 11:40 PM CST

Reality TV. It’s all but taken over our airwaves and become the very definition of cheap entertainment in our culture. Thanks to Bob Saget, we all have a little piece of our brain that’s wired to be addicted to home videos of singing dogs, messy toddlers and disastrous weddings. Enter the latest project from DAVE Networks, which has teamed up with Hollywood Licensing–Reality.TV.
Currently in private beta, I got a chance to look at Reality.TV. It’s a video social community site for user-generated content. The premise of Reality.TV is that you can post your own clips of your life, and make your own reality show. It’s like a self-made documentary–oh wait, LG15 mastered that already. OK, it’s like a self-broadcasting webcam network, without the webcam. Actually, it’s more like YouTube a la 2006, before you could find SNL clips on the site. Yeah. It’s everything you loved and hated about America’s Funniest Home Videos.
When you get right down to it, Reality.TV really is a self-broadcasting tool. Upload your content, promote your channel, and share it with the world. Clips can be sent to friends, embed on other websites, favorited, saved to other users’ channels, and all that fun. It’s a social network where you can make friends, keep up with friends, and comment on others’ clips. It’s a network where everyone can sit back and watch clips as if they were playing back-to-back on television.

The biggest problem with Reality.TV so far is that you wouldn’t know it by going to the homepage. I mean, once you visit the homepage, it’s pretty obvious that you’re on a video-sharing network, but the self-broadcasting tools for creating your own reality television show, or watching others, really isn’t all that evident. What you’ll find on the homepage is auto-playing clips of scratching bears and babies with spaghetti in their noses, with channel options that span topics like Amazing, Funny, and Animals. There’s nothing here that says “bring me your mundane clips of you ranting about your really bad day at school, and we’ll help you turn it into a cohesive series.”
Isn’t that what a reality show is really about? I mean, how many clips will I really have of my dad screwing up the carving of the Thanksgiving turkey? OK, I’m exaggerating, but you get my point. Reality television, for every day users, is about every day life, and this isn’t quite reflected in the site so far. But otherwise, the network has all the tools necessary for enabling the spreading of videos to friends across the web.

Nice find.
I dont think i had heard of anyone buying Reality.tv before (though i may of heard but forgot as my memory is BAD)
The domian is GREAT, instantly catchy, easy to remember & brand BUT after reading the details of the plans for Reality.tv then i am most definetley feeling they are not using this domain to it's full potential.
It reads as another Youtube clone & that is the last thing needed at this time.

I know it is far to early to dismiss Reality.tv as a wasted opportunity so i will need to wait & see how it really turns out, fingers crossed it is a bit more imaginative than the writer of the mashable post expressed.

I just checked the renewal fee according to Ahead.tv, Ahead.tv says it is $900 a year Premium. At $900 yr this is a great buy, im shocked this domain was not taken earlier if renewal was around $900 (maybe $1800 before discounts)

Youtube is the original idea but not necessary the end of online video tools.

In china, they have local online video and way better traffic than youtube.
