Hello to all.
Just wanted to ask: does anyone here have a real estate license/ or broker license/going to school for it?

b/c I am young... (20 years old)
and would like to get it...
MAINLY for my own use/have full access to all the listings etc.
so I can find good deals in prop. and/or homes for investment.

I just had some questions/would like to talk to someone with experience in this.

few to start are...
say once I graduate the class and I am licensed
I would need to go to work for a Real Estate Broker/Agency
in order to have access to MLS, correct?

all help is appreciated, thanks!

My Dad(and also my grandpa) worked as Real Estate Broker person for some time(don't know how long). After he left real estate, he has always kept his license. It helped when we moved(but we don't plan on moving again-we love our house). Plus many friends and neibors have had questions and my dad was able to help them out. That license is great job securty!!!!! If you lost your job, then the next day you could go and start working has a Real Estate broker because you have your license. And when you retire, you can do some work for a Real Estate company for some extra money.
So I would say get it if you can.

Real Estate Agent vs. Real Estate Broker ... two different examinations, licenses, and requirements needed to attain, and then to maintain, continuing education (subject to state variations, rules, etc.), IMHO. :gl:

Real Estate Agent (check with your respective state's Real Estate Board(s)) ... in a brief nutshell:
Pre-licensing course, and then sit for the Real Estate Salesperson/Agent Exam.
Pass the Exam.
May only conduct business, transact through a licensed Broker (who is the only one that can pay you once you become licensed - you'll need to interview with Brokers - local or national - in your area, negotiate for compensation, fees & expenses, policy, expectations, etc.)).
MLS access is then granted (for a recurring fee) through your Broker and in participation with your local and state Listing service/rules.

All the best!

I agree with swimjenni it is worthwhile to have even if it is just for personal use and to fall back on should you need to. I also have my license and am currently working as an agent part time so I can eventually get my brokers license. It is a great investment in yourself.

I am not sure where you live, but I know in California that in order to gain access to the full MLS that you have to be working with a broker and to get your electronic key, which allows you to use lock boxes, you have to become a member of the Association of Realtors.

Hope that was helpful!! Good Luck!!
