.mobi Questions about .mobi???

I see the debates over .mobi, whether it is needed or not. I see both sides of the coin but I am confused over a few things.

1. If .mobi is not necessary why would major corps such as microsoft and vodafone waste their time and money to brand it?

2. Wouldnt these companies do research before launching .mobi to make sure this was the right thing to do?

I cant believe this was done as a way to make money off regs. We are talking about billion dollar companies who thrive off of success not failure.

Can someone please give me guidance on this one?

Keith, I think you ask valid questions. The corporate giants don't just lend their names to things willy nilly. Some level of research was certainly done before each of these corps became backers. Ericsson, Google, GSM Association, Hutchison, Microsoft, Nokia, Orascom Telecom, Samsung Electronics, Syniverse, T-Mobile, Telefónica Móviles, TIM and Vodafone don't care about reg fees, they saw a need for better coding for small devices and considered .mobi to be a credible solution. Actually, TIM will soon care about reg fees since they have gotten involved even deeper with .mobi in Italy.

I think the "mobi exists to profit from the registration/renewel fee" arguement is hilarious...

like every month the mTLD splits the profits down the middle and cuts every one of the companies a check... heh

I would think that if they're "scamming" us they would have a more complex "scam" in mind than just profiting from regfee........... otherwise known as a legit business plan.

I will also add that revenue from registration fees are a joke to huge companies like these. An executive luncheon costs more than the money they would make from registration fees. These people wipe their asses with Ben Franklin's picture.

you don't need any guidance, you are right on

they created mobi, not for reg fees which amount to a pittance for these guys

they created mobi becuase despite all the assertions to the contrary by all of our anti-mobi visitors, the internet does not work well from mobile phones ...period ... it doesn't and it never has ..

so they created mobi in an attempt to reinvigorate mobile phone browsing by creating a set of common standards that everyone, website creators and phone manufacturers can count on

they did all this so people will use the internet from their phone more than they do and so the mobi investors can all make a pile of money from an invigorated mobile internet market ...

i guess i would say it doesn't work _because_ no one does it

and then we get into the question of what comes first, a lousy experience or no interest on the part of users ?

i know that i was very interested in accessing the net from a palm, i bought a modem etc and quickly gave up because sites displayed so badly and were so inconsistent and so slow to load

so i would say that technically it _can_ work, but in practice it just plain doesn't, certainly not in enough numbers to create the kind of active and vital internet experience that the mobi backers are trying to create

The money that mtld has made so far is nothing. they probably havent even made any profit yet. it costs millions of dollars to set up and run a company such as mtld. They would need to have people reg millions of names to make decent money.

Good question, and I don't know the answer. I also don't know why no one has asked mTLD yet either. All I know so far is that those companies agreed there needed to be some mobile web standard and put up some money to make it happen. Other than that, no one seems to know what kind of relationship mTLD has with these companies.

jeff, i certainly don't but i tend not to worry too much since all of these guys are intense competitors with each other ..... google/microsoft ...... nokia/ericcson

i am fairly certain that there won't be too much skullduggery in mtld simply because these guys have always got one eye on each other

if there was something untoward going on, we can count on them to blow the whistle on each other!

in fact, this very situation was what attracted me to mobi in the first place ... i figured that anything that could get these companies united in common cause had to be worth looking at

what i think it was, and is, is the desire to make the mobile internet work _better_, so they can all make a _lot_ more money!
