I tried to discuss this in another forum but never got any replies. Wonder if it would be better here?
Regarding all the comments about "Wait and see if mobi takes off" ... How and when will we know?

Do you think mobi has already taken off and established?

Admob among some other mobile focused companies seem to be doing quite well with mobi ads and sales, but how will we know? When everyone knows what .mobi is?

Can anyone tell me where it is that you look to see some sort of chart or results on if mobi is catching on?

Any suggestions about how to determine the value or popularity of other extensions such as .us?

Good questions.

Short answer:

Huh. Now that's interesting. So this command "site:.mobi" gives you all .mobi sites indexed on Google? in pagerank order I presume? If so, that's just awesome. You can see who's doing well and try and figure out why.

Very nice.

Glad you like it :)

It's a well known trick, but the ranking is not by PR.

I think it uses the entire Google algorithm, except the keyword.

The Google algo has so many variables that the impact of PR is not readily observable in terms of ranking.

Many people think the number of links from trusted and relevant other sites (for example) is more important than current PR itself.

No, DotMobi has just barely scratched the surface. DotMobi has yet seen its full potential. Yes, "Wait and See" is a very accurate comment that can be applied to DotMobi. Most of the new technologies for mobile devices were in their development stages last year. In 2008, you should see the early starts of these technologies. In 2009, the mobile infrastructure should be in place so by the latter half of 2009 and the 1st half of 2010, you should see an explosion of new websites for both DotMobi and Mobile in general. Hey....Rome was not built in a day.....and the same can be said for Mobile content.

I think once we see some examples of how developers are using Google Android software, it will give us a better look at the possible future of mobi.

IMHO it's pretty clear that - net net - Android cannot harm .mobi, it can only help it.

Long conversation, I know, and timing is one of the key factors around which the argument revolves.

And OK, it's possible that the help I'm referring to may not be very significant - it is possible.

But I'm willing to bet that Android cannot make or break .mobi - and that this would become obvious to many more people fairly soon.
