Questioning my counter offer

Had a ligit offer of $500 on a name I really like CitizenK9.com listed at 1100 at sedo and other places.

Not quite ready to sell for 500 and wanting it closer to my list price I countered by saying that I was expecting a minimum of 850 for this name. (basically saying 850 or bust)

Now it has been a few days and I havent heard from the buyer. Did I counter too steep and was I too definite with my minimum. I figured that anybody offering 500 for this (as the first touch base offer) could easily go 850 and that the person wasnt a very experienced domain shopper by starting out that high.

whaddayathink?

I would have countered at $5000+ and worked my way down. You win some and you lose some. While I hate losing out on a few $500 sales here and there I'd be screwed if I lost on on the $xxxx sales. Most of the time you can still recover the sale even if you do over counter. I've only lost out a few times altogether. Alot of times I think they disappeared only to come back with more money in their pockets.

NAMEmogul You are absolutely right - I kinda assumed he has seen the sedo price. (note to self: never assume anything)

But I also looked at his website and he was inventor type person dealing with human powered vehciles so the whole corporate scenario was out.

Lesson learned. Always first counter with a big number - especially here since the first offer was kinda big to begin with.

Are you nuts Fleege....??

CitizenK9 - is there a meaning of this im missing...

$500.. D-:. CitizenK9 has a total google no of hits of 778. And every single extension (bar yours) are still available for this term.. So im more than confused...

There is a time to counter and a time to bail. But that is the problem with offering all your domains at "make me an offer"... For the liklihood is that if legit buyer had offered you $50 and you countered at $600 and he'd re-countered at $500 then you would have been happy..

As it is, you might get the extra $300 odd bucks from your buyer but if you dont then Id be kicking myself until Xmas for this domain.. Jeez, id drop it when renewals came up anyway..

Namemogul's logic is correct.
However, it applies to names that are in 'general acceptance' of a certain high quality.
as in every rule of course, there are exceptions, when a .com is a must. I am afraid this isnt one of them.
this particular domain IMHO is worth whatever you can get for it.
Therefore, I have to agree with badger. I would have sold.

P.S.
If someone comes right out and gives you a relatively good offer, it does not necessarily mean they are willing to go further.
In some cases (and I believe this one is one of those), it just means they are serious, and do not want to waste time, nor negotiate further.

Anyhow, there is a lesson to be learned from every potential transaction, so I would just credit this lesson and debit the loss :)

Chances are he'll be back...making you sweat is a good strategy. Having said that, $500 for your name is a good offer.

You're kinda screwed if he doesn't come back of his own accord. If you do know how to find him, after a week, track him down...and do an "upon further .....' and get your $500.

I kinda agree with the other guys on this one.
I had an offer on one of my names a few months ago and thought seriously about countering---it was 500 also.
But it was a name I probably would not have renewed so I took it and ran

Something you are missing - definitely. Citizen K9 has many meanings... and of course derives from the most famous movie of all times Citizen Caine. Citizen K9 is also a name for dog training certification + many dog hotels (kennels) and dog clubs are named Citizen Canine or K9.

I really would not sell it below 500 but maybe my counter was too steep. We'll see. The good thing about NameDrive offers (since they dont want any commission) is that you also get the persons name and email when the offer is made. So I can easily contact and study up on the person/buyer.

Citizen K9

Results 1 - 10 of about 1,260,000 for citizen K9. (0.44 seconds)

Of which I am "top Dog"... :) - pretty good for parked page for a search term with over one mil results.

And K9 alone is very searched: (not to mention citizen)

$500 was still a good offer. I think your counter was a reasonable response too, but perhaps would have been better without the inflexibility. Hope you manage to salvage a deal.

you say your top of google for the search term, do you get much traffic?

No biggie. Once they cancel the bid thread, call Sedo and they will contact him for you and ask if he still wants it for $500, or she. Whatever it may be.

Yeah, you probably should have let it go for $500. But chock one up to experience. Everyone in domaining has a few buyers. You can still change the price at Sedo to $500 and maybe he'll see it. Move on and focus on getting the next buyer!

There never was a sedo bid. The bid came through NameDrive. Actually that is one thing I love about ND. Since starting park there I have gotten considerable more bids than through any other parked service. Their "inquiry link" must be pretty user friendly - Unlike sedo bid process. It makes you feel like this is the final dooms day...

For CitizenK9.com is you got $500 I would have taken it... have you contacted the buyer back and said you will accept the offer...

I would...

Thanks

Yeah we are still talking. I may sell it for close to 500. 850 didnt scare him - he is just a small operator without extra cash.

Traffic. Not that much. It is one of my better performing names.
