Just did a whois on a dn and saw that that the create date was Sep-xx-04 and the expiration was Jan-xx-09.
I've never seen - or at least noticed - an instance where the month of expiration is different than the month of creation. Is this a normal/common situation?

Some registrars offer a service to "change" your expiration date so that you can have uniform expiration dates on all of your domains. I have never used this service, but I suspect whoever had this domain at sometime did use such a service.
one way this can happen is if the registrant used ConsoliDate on GoDaddy to consolidate his renewal/expiration date (or , in case the domain is not at GoDaddy right now , he might have used ConsoliDate while the domain was at GoDaddy previously) ... moreover , other registrars might offer similar services too

oops ... just saw that Fonzie posted right before me
I use this feature quite a bit, take the total number of domains you own divide by 12 months and advance them forward so your renewals are equal every month if you plan to hold them.
