Question on Sedo Auctions

I've sold names at Sedo but have never attempted to buy there until now. I put a bid on a domain and the buyer counter offered slightly higher. I accepted the counter offer and was immediately provided with an invoice from Sedo. I was under the impression that the seller could now send the domain to auction.

Since I'm already being invoiced, does this mean that the buyer has chosen not to send the domain to auction and is accepting my bid as the final price?

Yes, it does.

Your question makes me think you are surprised, and probably got a good deal. Congrats!

Thanks, but I'm not sure I'm home free yet. A whois lookup on the domain returns the following information.

This domain name has been suspended due to invalid Whois information.

Even if the seller is legit, the registrar might not release the domain. I emailed the sedo rep in charge of the transaction to notify him of the circumstances. I'm remaining cautiously optimistic.

In my opinion, an unbelievable deal!

Bill, I hope the deal is genuine and not another "Auto" sale!
Good luck and keep us posted.

Some sellers don't understand Sedo auctions. Others sellers don't think that it is ethical to push to auction after receiving a counter-offer. Some buyers don't pay after a domain goes to public auction for privacy reasons. I received a delayed offer once and the delay in response prevented the option of an auction. There is a variety of reasons why a domain won't go to auction.

Congrats on the buy! Hope to hear that is legit.

Thanks for the encouragement folks but:

Dear Bill,

Unfortunately, Sedo must cancel this transaction as the seller is no longer the owner of this domain and hence not entitled to sell or transfer this domain.

Please accept our sincerest apologies for any inconvenience caused and please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any further queries.

Best regards,

Joe

I sent Joe two emails asking him to look into this before I sent my payment but never got an answer. I didn't want the buyer to get cold feet so I sent my payment via Paypal this afternoon. Less than an hour later I received the message above. Looks like I won't be receiving the domain.

Sedo actually refunded my Paypal account within an hour so I can't really complain about that aspect of it.

I'm sorry to hear that. :(

There are too many people who don't remove domains from Sedoโ€™s domain management tool when they are sold or expire. This is also why Sedo sometimes takes days to verify a domain before they add it to your account. They should automate whois verification before selling and when you add domains to your portfolio.

I've been saying that for years. I'm not a programmer, but how hard would i be to do this:

*Have a database of whois names/addresses/phones associated with an account
*Verify on listing that the official whois name is in the account holders database.
*Note the expiration date and re-verify both on that date and whenever an offers is made or the whois status changes.
*If a domain whois is found to be non-matching, put a sedo listing hold on it for 14 days with a note to the listed to update, verify, or renew.
*If not matching after 14 days, delist from sale, and put in a holding for verification status.

This would be a great service to both buyers and sellers. As mostly a seller, I know I often forget to delist dropped or sold names. However, now before ever accepting or making a counter offer, I always double check the whois to make sure I still own it. I think this is a good practice for all sellers.

This will be just great but I don't think how they will be able to verify private regged domains.

Sorry to hear that man. But in general, the answer to your question is that when you make an offer, the seller has three choices: accept the offer, counter the offer, or push it to auction. Once he counters the offer, the ball is in your court and if you accept he must make the sale. If you had countered, he would be able to choose from all three options again.
