Question About Tasting

I have always wondered why a domain registrar doesn't simply register millions of domains in one go and then delete them all 3 days later (obviously parking them within this time period). Surely this would bring a huge amount of revenue? I know some people do a lot of tasting but registrars could register a ridiculous amount.

Well, network solutions does that. But instead of registering millions of random domains, they only do it when you try to lookup a domain haha.

I guess they don't because if they did, we'd hate them as much as netsol.

They wouldn't offer registrations, simply use their registrar status to exploit the system.

Millions would be too much, it would just attract unwanted attention and is also not necessary at this late stage of the game.

Most domains worth tasting have been through many instances of tasting and those that haven't can be tasted at a much less conspicuous rate per day.

Unless of course the registrars think that the tasting loophole is certain to be closed - then that may well happen on a massive scale in the final few days.

PS: NetSol have stated publicly they don't look at the traffic of those domains. Make of that what you will :)

Sure there would be very few domains with traffic, however, when registering 10 million domains, for example, you will receive a significant amount of traffic.

They are domainers now, aren't they ? I doubt they send all their expiring names to namejet :guilty:

Sure, as long as those few that you mentioned are among the 10 million.

A better way of doing it would be to just try to find those few domains without tasting the others.

I'm sure you would agree that the 80/20 rule in this case is more like the 99.99% rule.

True, however, I really don't understand why these registrars don't simply register virtually every available domain and then drop them automatically after 3 days and then re-register. Clearly completely unethical but big money!

You mean like buying up all the lottery tickets after a few roll-over weeks - practically a guaranteed profit, yes.

Whether it's technically doable I don't know. Haven't followed the tasting issue closely for a long time now, hoping it will be history soon.

My impression was registrars have to put a refundable deposit on a per-domain-basis before registering anything.

If you had that kind of money to play with, would you risk effectively offering proof to every enterprising lawyer that it may be worth it going after your deep pockets in the hope of a generous settlement?

Registrars know that the big tasters are under fire, legally and otherwise, so I doubt it many of them would consider it a risk worth taking even if they could do it.

Yes there will always be a few desperate outfits around, but it costs money to become a registrar so that probably acts as a kind of natural filter.
