Question about dashes in domain name

Today I found a domain name containing dashes. This domain name seems to have a really good search volume when written into a keywordtool without dashes.

This domain name goes like this, for example:

a-b-c.com

My question is: does google or any other SE list this domain name according to abc together? (without dashes) So will it receive traffic according to the exact search volume when typing abc in google keywordtool?

I hope someone can help me out with this.

Thanks!

A related question (I'm curious myself): does google or other SE actually care about the domain name? I know they care about the extension, such as if it is local it will score higher in local google. But the actual domain name does it affect the ranking, on top of the content of the website?

short answer is, no

as that would be infringing on the domain without hyphens

also, do not equate "exact search volume" numbers with the amount of actual traffic the domain will receive.

Ok, here is what I think is true based on what I have seen or read:

- Keywords in a domain CAN make a difference, but that advantage is small. A well optimized site can easily rank before most parked domains for the same keywords, unless that parked domain is also optimized for the same keywords.

- Google will match keywords in a domain name, IF the keywords are in the same order (ie. "book shop" and bookshop.com, but not mybookshop.com or shopbook.com)

- Hyphens are treated like spaces, so "book shop" will match bookshop.com and book-shop.com and one may match better than the other.

- Search numbers for the domain without dashes can be considered, but only if the search numbers are low. The reason is that there will be so many examples of sites that use they keywords or letters WITHOUT dashes, that the one with dashes will have little chance to be found, since it is not an exact match.

- In my opinion, domains with hyphens CAN and DO get great traffic, but are best used for parking or development. Most people don't like hyphens and there are so many domains without them that it doesn't make much sense to buy them with the intent of selling for a profit unless you know what you are doing.

Thank you for your answer.

Great detailed answer. Thank you very much too.

I think that Dashes can be really helpful to reg a unique domain name.. Try to look for more information in Wikipedia.

Yeah, rob dashes can be helpful, but I personally think that you can also use another extensions like .net instead of .com without dashes.
