I sold PXVR.com yesterday in the SEDO auction for $235. There were 221 4-letter dot coms in this 7 day auction. My name had over 1,500 views by far the most of any in the auction, which got me pretty excited but as things worked out this auction was not exciting at all. I hand registered the domain 18 years ago and used it for a couple of years as a video news site. Traffic worked out to be pretty good on the site for a while but monetization was the issue so after more than 2 years online I took it down.

PXVR.com could be used for a whole lot of businesses and could stand for Picture Virtual Reality. The name is not an excellent name, not like a single word descriptive dot com but it is a sharp 4L dot com name. There were 221 names in the auction if I recall correctly and 30 sold, which I have to say is pretty disappointing.

What does this say about the state of domaining these days? Let me know what you think in the comments please. Thanks!

Auctions are for liquidation/reseller pricing, so take what you can get.

If a name sells at auction, it's probably a name you should have kept.

This means that most high reported sales are fake, I got 2 low ball offers recently on my domains, again proves my idea, no big sales for me yet.
Maybe others know how to push boundaries and get more, but maybe their are great manipulators. :glasses:
I have hand reg this year domains which I desired almost 6 years ago, then I wonder wth is happening, the AI bro.

NVM abbreviation for "never mind" or NV Nevada, also any 4L ending with "ME" has potential.
Hi

yeah forge, 20 years ago, that was reason for acquiring them.

:)

in hindsight, sure everybody can see usage potential now, but who was wanting to buy?

imo...

A profit is a profit but investing in a LLLL and selling it for like a $100 profit looks like hard work and a thin margin to sustain a portfolio.
Hi

a $100 profit, is not a loss ;)

it's not hard work, when you just buy and wait for offers.
and... it's not like you don't have other names that have sold for bigger margins or have earned revenue to help sustain the portfolio.

imo...

Hey Biggie we're gonna get rich at this rate! ...LOL.
Hi
i started by making small sales and scaling up as i learned the game.
and my head ain't too biggie, to make some small sales again.

imo....

HI

for this particular auction, yeah.
but just or because a name sells at an auction, that doesn't mean the seller should have kept it.

i for one, didn't want to keep them and there are others i've sold in auction that i wanted to sell and was glad they sold for the amount they sold for.

just saying....

imo...

Before the grand GoDaddy rug pull (Auctions Member backstabbing), I had some very satisfactory auction results with LLLL.com

Hi

let's say you regged it for $10, 18 years ago
and have been renewing it for average of $10 for the last 18 years, which adds up to about $190.

so, you made $45, after 18 years, and the asset increased in value by about $2.50 per year

:)

BTW; i put a couple of names in the auction, to trim the list, but haven't checked closing sales yet.

imo...
Which auction? Where?

What is the GoDaddy rug pull? When did it happen?

Lol, definitely. Not everyone has the patience to work like that though or a strong enough portfolio. Can't all be as laid-back as you are ;)

But yeah, every dollar counts. Over the years it does add up significantly :)

I personally would never auction a LLLL @ sedo unless you just want to accept that it might go for $99. But, I buy several every auction. Bought 3 this last time, and feel I paid below wholesale on each one. Already received an offer on one 2x what I paid.

Two problems:

1) Not enough promotion / traffic to the auctions.

2) All the auctions end at the same time. As an investor, if I didn't get one of those 3 I wanted, I would have gone back and looked at what was available. But, that's not possible. They should be staggering them 10 minutes apart.

2) All the auctions end at the same time.
Not sure how I missed that, minus them all being low grade names. Still, they absolutely need to stagger them.

Obviously need an end user....I have not participated in Sedo or other auctions primarily visited by domain investors. AI making it easier to discover potential end users.....

The domain name PXVR.com is a short, brandable, and highly flexible 4-letter .com, which gives it strong appeal in several hot sectors. Based on the combination of letters โ€” especially โ€œVR,โ€ which is widely recognized as Virtual Reality โ€” here are the most likely categories and buyers for PXVR.com:

๐Ÿ”ฎ Likely Industry Targets

  1. Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality Companies
    • The โ€œVRโ€ ending strongly suggests a VR-related brand.
    • โ€œPXโ€ could suggest Pixel Experience, Projection, or Pro Experience, all relevant to immersive tech.
  2. Gaming Companies & Studios
    • Especially those working on VR or metaverse projects.
    • Could be ideal for an indie studio or VR gaming platform.
  3. Tech Startups
    • New companies love short, catchy .com names โ€” PXVR sounds futuristic and modern.
  4. Web3 / Metaverse / XR Ventures
    • Fits the aesthetic of crypto, blockchain, or metaverse domain naming (e.g., short, capitalized, and tech-sounding).
  5. Hardware or Wearable Device Makers
    • Especially startups or stealth-mode companies making VR headsets, sensors, or AI-enabled glasses.

๐Ÿง  Examples of Potential Buyers (Real & Hypothetical)

  1. Meta (Reality Labs) โ€“ For a sub-brand or internal XR project
  2. Bytedance (Pico VR) โ€“ They are investing heavily in VR tech
  3. Niantic โ€“ AR gaming company (think Pokรฉmon Go)
  4. Unity or Unreal Engine Developers โ€“ For a dev tool, plugin, or VR framework
  5. HTC Vive or Valve โ€“ VR headset makers
  6. PXLab or PX Technologies โ€“ If a company with PX initials is in tech/VR
  7. Startups on AngelList โ€“ Especially those tagged under "VR", "Metaverse", or "AI"
  8. Crypto/NFT Ventures โ€“ PXVR could easily brand a futuristic digital space
  9. Esports teams or platforms โ€“ Looking for a memorable acronym-style name
  10. Private Equity or domain investors โ€“ As a flip or asset in a portfolio of future-forward domains

๐Ÿ’ฐ Valuation Range (Estimates)

  • Wholesale (to domainers): $2,000โ€“$5,000
  • End User (strategic buyer): $10,000โ€“$25,000+
  • With the right buyer in the VR/XR/Metaverse sector, $50K+ is possible if the brand match is strong.

Nice to see Fred. I had the name 18 years and marketed it on all the major domain platforms and never got a decent offer. AI info is good for some things but as we all know talk and in this case with AI talk is real cheap! Words are just words buddy. When the money hits the bank it counts!

The most valuable things to me in the AI report I published is not the valuations, but the potential end user buying companies.

Sure! You might find it interesting to run an old name that I have through one of your chat bots like chatgpt. Perhaps on WhereHouse.com you might find it even more interesting. Have fun Fred and everybody else!

Hi

after holding for 18yrs, the OP no doubt has/had.considered the potentials.
but when neither domainer nor the mighty enduser steps forwardโ€ฆ then what?
