I sold PXVR.com yesterday in the SEDO auction for $235. There were 221 4-letter dot coms in this 7 day auction. My name had over 1,500 views by far the most of any in the auction, which got me pretty excited but as things worked out this auction was not exciting at all. I hand registered the domain 18 years ago and used it for a couple of years as a video news site. Traffic worked out to be pretty good on the site for a while but monetization was the issue so after more than 2 years online I took it down.

PXVR.com could be used for a whole lot of businesses and could stand for Picture Virtual Reality. The name is not an excellent name, not like a single word descriptive dot com but it is a sharp 4L dot com name. There were 221 names in the auction if I recall correctly and 30 sold, which I have to say is pretty disappointing.

What does this say about the state of domaining these days? Let me know what you think in the comments please. Thanks!

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
That says to me that some domains still sell undervalued while others sell for way over their worth. It also says to me that some people are really great at negotiating and selling for what they want, while others not so much.

Coincidentally those who are very good at negotiating often seem to also have thick wallets that allow them to just do that: hold domains until the right offer comes in.

What came first, skills or wallet, is yet to be fully understood. A bit like the chicken and the egg

a huge amount of 4L domains are for sale right now, not sure what is happening, but it looks ominous

Hi

let's say you regged it for $10, 18 years ago
and have been renewing it for average of $10 for the last 18 years, which adds up to about $190.

so, you made $45, after 18 years, and the asset increased in value by about $2.50 per year

:)

BTW; i put a couple of names in the auction, to trim the list, but haven't checked closing sales yet.

imo...

Random 4L have never done well in auction mode. Sedo does nothing to promote them anyway, in addition no one in the general populace knows what a Sedo is, and I'm beginning to think that populace also doesn't care a hoot about VR either and probably never will.

BTW Sedo put a 5L domain in their featured LLLL.com auction, so that shows how "on the ball" they really are.

"Never say never" because there have been exceptions, and that's all I care to say. Except to say that if you don't already know that, you should probably just drop the names you have any don't worry about the "hows and whys".

I wouldn't put any name of value at a $99 reserve unless I'm truly okay with $99.

Hi

these did better than expected

jkme.comAuction closed16334 $US
nvml.comAuction closed21333 $US

we were carrying those since 2005/2006, so off the books they go!

judging by number of bids and closing prices, i'd say there were more eyes on this auction than the last 4 letter auction they did a few months ago.

by comparison, in the NP domains wanted section, nobody wants 4L .com domains with the letters "V, J and K" anyway.
and if they do, budget is only $100 or less

imo....

NVM abbreviation for "never mind" or NV Nevada, also any 4L ending with "ME" has potential.

Anyway, these days anything is better than "Request Domains" dissection.

They usually set a ridiculously low reserve for these auctions.

Basically why I don't submit any. Reserve should be within a range. So you attract offers and eyes on the auction without selling as a loss leader. A profit is a profit but investing in a LLLL and selling it for like a $100 profit looks like hard work and a thin margin to sustain a portfolio.

They still do this sometimes, allowing a reserve price range? I think?

But you know, it's mostly domainers following these auctions I'd reckon so it's expected not to go very high.

Yes, they do. I ran one of my CVCV names earlier this year with a $x,xxx reserve (wasn't met but I was protected).

Just that it's not worth selling your domains on auctions, unless you're liquidating. But this has been true for a decade and a half.

Curious to see how the rest of 2025 shapes up for 4L domains like this.

Hey Biggie we're gonna get rich at this rate! ...LOL... BTW-- after commission fees I received less than 200. What a bust! You've hit the obvious point PB. I had it up for sale with quite a bit of activity for years on lots of platforms. And Johnn rocketreach value of the site when it was online is a joke! Apparently that site is just for entertainment. Never and I mean never was it worth close to $2-million. I wish!
