With the amount of oil and gas under there this issue is not going away any time soon. The US is pressing Canada to cede claim to a large part of the arctic - not going to happen. The northwest passage is in Canadian territory whether they or the Russians like it or not.

As for the Russian claim - in a bbc article on the same topic a geographer says that same underwater shelf they reason entitles them to the claim also extends from Canada. We don't have nukes to force our claim but we have Celine Dion, so don't piss us off or you will be forced to listen to her!

Yeah the states really don't like that Canada laid claims to the land they say it is International water while Canada says that it is internal waters. The U.S continues to send subs etc through there without permission from Canada. Our new PM actual made that an issue in his first news conference. He also said that we would continue to state our sovereignty over it.

And about Russia and the shelfs,
Canada "could say that the Lomonosov ridge is part of the Canadian shelf, which means Russia should in fact belong to Canada, together with the whole of Eurasia", he observed drily.

AFAIK, the closest mainland to the North Pole is Greenland. Denmark is sitting on a gold mine with Greenland with oil resources, land resources etc. They're really the only ones to truly gain from Global Warming it would seem ;) (Most of Greenland is under 2.5Km of Ice! That's a mile and a half deep!)

The logical thing to do would be to draw a circle around the north pole; it can be small, (say a mile) and then draw lines extending to the territories around it. Russia would get a very sizeable sum ofcourse :)

Logical would be to keep it as-is.
