Pulling eBay auction at the last second is possible?

I was unaware one could cancel an auction with less than 12 hours to go.

There was a one word .com on ebay ending this morning, I put in a bid with less than 2 hours to go to only find that the auction had been canceled a few minutes before the end time.

How was this seller able to cancel the auction within an hour of the ending time?

What is going on here?

Very good question. I was always under the impression that a listing nor bid cannot be removed when the auction has 12hrs or less to go.

Unless, someone reported the item and ebay pulled the auction?

It happens!
it sucks, and SHOULDN'T,
but there are no rules against that practice.
The seller just has to pay the fees, thats all!
LOL
Crazy huh?

Here is the E-bay policy...

Timing Matters

When there are 12 hours or less remaining and the item has a winning bid, including a reserve met bid, sellers cannot make any changes to the listing, including:

Ending the item early. Sellers may cancel bids, but not end the item unless the item is being sold to the high bidder.

Adding to or changing the item description.

Note: Canceling bids or making changes to a listing with bids when there are 12 hours or less remaining, can damage the buyer experience and can undermine trust in the marketplace.

To end your listing early:
Type your item number into the End My Listing Early form. (You can get this number on your listing, on your confirmation email, or on your My eBay page.)

If there are bids on your item, choose between

Cancel bids and end listing early or Sell item to high bidder(s) and end listing early

(If your item has no bids, you can skip this step).

Choose the reason you're ending your listing early.

Your listing will end and will no longer be active on eBay. If there were bidders, they will be emailed that their bid was canceled and the listing ended early.

Note: Your account will still be charged listing fees (such as the Insertion Fee) if you end your listing early. Consider revising your listing first if there are aspects of it you want to change or improve.

Sortof defeats the purpose of the auction!
Terrible Seller!

in the early years, you could really get some great domains on ebay for $25.... now its mostly hyphens and numbers...... expired jargon.... the 12 hour rule is to keep the auction exp. real, otherwise you might have 50% of sellers pulling auctions people have painfully bidded on for days, gone just like that, ruining the whole exp... turning people off to ebay.

Hey Red Rock, whenever I see your id I think of Red Rock Casino in Vegas, or Red Rocks Ampitheatre in Colorado.

It does defeat the purpose of the auction. Between this, Moniker's Two Year Reacharound Clause , Sedo's laws of governance to do anything they want - many markets are becoming questionable to sell premium domain names.

There is a solution: namepros auctions.

The rules here have evolved into a system which is quite fair and inexpensive to the buyer while also creating revenue for NamePros. We as members have the opportunity to create events for the benefit of the forum and the domain community.

A simple but fair plan which doesn't screw the buyer and the seller is all anyone is looking for in an auction :!:

- 100 auctions or less
- genre specific
- promotion
- a namepros panel who makes the decisions (though prebidding has served to do this virtually automatically)

The model for Ty Maier's LLLL auction was ideal. Keep it short simple and to the point. (one word .net auction, one word .com auction. numeric auction, idn auction, 3 character, etc.)

I tried to end an auction with less than 12 hours remaining and the system would NOT allow it even though my auction stated, "I reserve the right to end this auction at anytime since item is listed for sale locally".

It was a pool cue that somone contacted me about by phone and I ended up forced to sell it on Ebay. I figured rules is rules............

Ive def. heard of the Casino in Vegas, but not the ampitheatre in Colorado.
Hmmm, maybe I could borrow one of their logo's,
as soon as I get tired of my avatar!

I guess they have to have a loose policy on this.
Suppose you have a 7-day listing,
Alot can happen in 7 days, or even in 1 day.
Flood, Fire, etc.
I know one of the options on the early withdrawal is...
"item is no longer available".

Kinda shady, but stuff does happen!
Just check seller Feedback,
they cant get away with that too many times!

Take Care,
Red Rock!

Seller feedback was 27 with 100% reg'd in 05

I do believe the email I received from ebay states:

-------------The listing in which you were a bidding participant:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ,Domain name one word,10 years old.

has been ended by eBay. Since the listing was ended by eBay, for the transaction itself is null and void.

To protect the privacy of all eBay members, we can't discuss the details of the listing removal. We hope this assures you that your account information will also remain private.

If the seller relists the item, you are welcome to bid on it again.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. Thank you for your understanding.

Regards,

Customer Support (Trust and Safety Department)-------------------

The bids I placed were within 2.5 hours of the auction ending time and this email was received less than one hour before the scheduled end time.

Red Rocks is a great place for a concert, many regard it as one of their favorite venues in a natural setting with awesome views and one of a kind acoustics. It is situated along the front range of the Rocky Mountains less than 30 minutes West of Denver. If in the area check out the concert schedule and be sure to catch an artist you would love to see live.

This email from Ebay states that EBAY ENDED THE AUCTION. Not the seller.

I would bet someone contacted the seller via,
the contact seller button,
and made a behind closed doors deal???
Very sorry to hear that!

What a cut-throat, snaky biz!

Hey I checked out that link.
That Red Rocks Ampitheatre, is beautiful!
I have to check that out sometime!
I'm not fond of their logo, so I guess I won't steal it,
for my avatar.

I thought you could, so long as you individually cancel all the bids on it first.

You're right RJ,
This is their policy...

Choose the reason you're ending your listing early.

Your listing will end and will no longer be active on eBay. If there were bidders, they will be emailed that their bid was canceled and the listing ended early.

If the auction was ended by eBay, the seller was probably selling a name they didn't own (or something of the sort) and got suspended. Does the seller still have his account?

I've seen this happen a few times myself and think it is not right.

If you are affraid you domain will not sell for the amount you want, use a reserve , that is what it's there for. Or start the bidding at an amout you can be happy selling for.

.99 starting bids w/ no reserves are cheap to list but are also easy for snipers to target. You only have to pay the reserve fee if the name does not sale so if your reserve you list is realistic, you should be ok. I don't like it when people abuse the rules and exploit grey areas.

According to this page, there is no way to end an auction with less than 12 hours remaining if the item has a winning bid.

http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/end_early.html

This policy does not always make sense for example: the house just burned down and the item has been converted to ash.

Yeah,
I understand what you're saying.
That is the page I was referring to, also.
Under the section Timing Matters..

"When there are 12 hours or less remaining and the item has a winning bid, including a reserve met bid, sellers cannot make any changes to the listing, including:

Ending the item early. Sellers may cancel bids, but not end the item unless the item is being sold to the high bidder".

So, major contradiction here.
less than 12 hrs.
Sellers cannot end the item early,
BUT
Sellers may cancel bids

Same thing, So the seller just keeps cancelling bids.
Makes no sense!
LOL

EBAY - NEW RULES

I'M NOT SURE IF THIS IS WHY THE SALE WAS PULLED BUT EBAY HAVE BANNED THE SALE OF ANY ITEMS THAT CAN BE DOWNLOADED.

This technically includes domains because they are delivered 'digitally' rather than physically; it's to deter the use of such sales to build huge feedback scores by selling pretty much nothing of worth for 1 cent at a time.

Domains may well be an unfortunate victim of this but there are ways around the new rules; it's all down to how you market them now....

Hi,

I actually won an auction recently but the slime ball seller refunded my payment without my agreement.

It was obvious to me that the Seller was not happy with the amount the domain sold for which is what I told him when I complained to him.

The Seller then said he'd transfer the domain to me once I (again) send him my GoDaddy info.

The Seller never made the transfer.

When I tried to notify eBay of this non-performance, I received an automated message that ebay policy is that I had to wait 10 days.

After 10 days ,I tried to file a complaint with eBay only to be sent to PayPal
which was the payment method used.

PayPal ,of course, was of no help.

Ebay should have stepped up to the plate.

It was a matter for them to fix, not a PayPal matter.

I just let the issue drop.

About a month ago, I had a seller (also a np'er) sell me a group of 6 llll.coms for 242.50 only to have him refund me without my consent telling me he already sold some of the domains somewhere else. Totally a violation of ebay policy.

Rather than attempt to compensate me with other LLLLs or anything he procedes to ignore my requests.

Then the guy tries to get me to agree to cancel the auction, I reply 'no I didn't ask for a refund, isn't this a violation of policy?'

Then he has the nerve to file an unpaid item dispute with me which of course I explained to paypal thoroughly.

Why strike my account with an unpaid item notice? Because this guy wanted his fees back of course why else. He also didn't want to admit that he shenaniganed me to ebay, that is for sure.

If you want I'll tell you who it is by PM, as oddly enough I had successful transactions with the NP prior to this ebay experience.

This goes back to my thoughts of some of us organizing a more regular auction, genre specific. Why not engage enough activity to create a weekly auction?

It will take some collaboration and organizing. :bingo:

But if done right it could become the preferred method in the industry at some point.
