Are proxys illegal in US?

iwas contacted by my host who has a reseller, the main server owner contacted him, he said he had been fined as the server is in the US and he wants my info etc.

im just wondering, are they legal or illegal in the US, and if there illegal, and he has been contacted by authorities, what position am i in, what can i do, please give advice

i was thinking, my proxy was ok in the morning, and then disabled i the night, if he were to get fiend, i dont think its via paypal, and for him to really get fined he would have to go to court or somethin, and he woulda disabled my account as soon as he got it, anyway, lemme know if you find anythign out about american proxy laws, i just thought, dont aol use proxys for there ISP?

As far as I know Proxies are NOT illegal. AOL does use Proxies. I don't understand why they would be illegal. I think these guy is having you on. Does it say NO Proxies in the ToS?

he dont have a TOS that i know of, this come days after i submitted a complaint about the CPU level being to high, SQL being down, ftp and everything else illegal, thanks, and i hope its not illegal

If the host doesn't have a TOS, they're in potentially big trouble. The FTC is
heavy-handed on websites doing business online that don't have those legal
fine prints.

At the very least, they should have a privacy policy, a terms of use/service,
and some disclaimers.

i never been to there site either, i am on a reseller of this persons, but there they are, i never know i was hosted there until the reseller told me

hosting providers do not need to use the sentence "do not use proxy scripts", enough to say something like "any scripts which might effect server security is restricted"

it is not illegal, but it is a risk for them
if an internet surfer does something which might cause legal problem for someone while using your proxy , on the other side the ip of hosting provider will be investigated first. Sure, hosting provider can prove the truth but it takes time and effort. time+effort means money. totally depends on hosting providers choices to give such a service or permisson or not

in there aup there are a few things there which hit border line

there hosted at managed and theyve pretty much copied there tos/aup word for word.

it is possible managed have allowed them to use the wording there are several dedicated server providers that allow this.

Just because proxies are help people commit crimes doesn't make em illegal. Just like anyone can legally buy a bong, even though its illegal to smoke marijuana. (is that an appropriate example? hehe)

if proxies are not legal why do AOL as well as many other sites use them, and why would microsoft and other such companies that release browsers make it so easy to add 1?

Proxies are legal for the most part. What is not legal is using a proxy you do not have permission to. That can be theft of service among other things. So using proxies from those lists collected from port scans may very well be illegal.
