I have heard that there are several domain registrars that will sell WHOIS information, even if it is privatized. I have also heard that if we choose to privatize our information, the company that is using their info in our stead legally owns the domain, and can shut things off any time that they choose, despite our money already being spent.

Is there a way to get around this? Does anyone have any good suggestions for free WHOIS protection that actually works?

Read the Terms and Conditions set forth by the registrar or whois privacy service provider that is shielding your domain contact information. That agreement should be a legally binding contract.
