Predicting trends before they happen

Does anyone try to predict trends before they happen, buy relevant domain names and sell them when the trend becomes common? Forecasting is a bit of a hit and miss strategy where some people do well out of it and some people have big losses. I am very interested in this type of domaining. I have had some opportunities but also some losses.

I am interested in what opinions people have on this topic.

I can only think of trimming the domain portfolio when the overall economy is starting to take a dip but before most domain investors have cooled down

No way. The only one I concentrate on are demographic statistics. For example in all western countries within the next 20 to 30 years the elderly will make 1 out of 4 humans. This tells me that things like retirement homes, nursing, geriatric names will be popular since names like that will be extremely needed to set up new businesses.

So I have been registering those which I must say .org goes very well with them too if .com is taken. Other than that stay away from Romney or Obama names or 3d this and that. STATISTICS DON'T LIE.

Lots of people predict trends.
See all the crap 2012 domains!
Or the obama for president.
Or the windows xp domains.

Oh, I could go on.

Too many domainers (or really wannabees) see something on the news and bam!
Searching for domains to fit the news.

I am not sure if internet will be as we know it after 20-30 years. I would say I am pretty sure it would not.

that's what I call long investment horizon :)

I think it is too long.
I just can think about 5-10 years.

if you want to invest on 20-30 years maybe you can consider something like

teleport ticket
taxi to the moon/ mars
medicine to cure all disease
rent a robot (maybe shorter than 20 years)
9D Movie
and other things

Predicting trends is not the hard part really, it is picking the right domain in that trend that will sell. I always try to pick trends since I do not have the funds in the bank to buy top domains all the time, sometimes it pays off and sometimes it doesn't. I do believe that Mobile Payments will be next once Apple show their cards, however picking the right domains in this niche at the minute is a bit tricky outside the no-brainers - MobilePayments.com , MobileWallet.com, Wallet.com etc.. I also think NFC tech will play a big role in our lives in the future. An area where I messed up on was following the 3D trend, although I did sell a few this was my first year in domaining and I just followed the crowd instead of thinking logically and just buying a few on the after market. People who have invested in Cloud domains have done well, I remember Giles Coley telling me that Cloud domains will be big in the future, a year later Apple buys icloud.com and the trend goes crazy. I sold - CloudPatrol.com and CloudTribe.com following this. Just try to keep a calm head and do not drink caffeine before reading up on trends.

Cheers
