I posted this in the search engine forum, but I think it will get more play here...

I see quite a few people selling PR (3, 4, 5, whatever) domains where the domain itself has PR0, but the www.(domain) has the PR listed in the sale. I've been told that if the domain itself doesn't have PR, then it "doesn't count". In other words, the potential buyer doesn't recognize the PR with the www. prefix.

For instance, I have www.pinotgris.net, which points to my wine blog http://pinotgris.blogspot.com

www.pinotgris.net has PR3
pinotgris.net has PR0

If I wanted to sell the domain pinotgris.net, should I list it as PR3? What are your thoughts on this?

When a domain is pointed to another, the pointer domain picks up the PR of the pointee. In other words, the PR3 you see for www.pinotgris.net is not for the domain itsself and "doesn't count". It may also be referred to as fake or invalid PR.

This is a good tool for detecting it,
http://www.seologs.com/pr-check/pagerank.html

Because it is "fake PR", you should not list this domain for sale as a PR domain.

To your other question, it doesn't really matter if the www. or non www version of the domain shows PR. As Dan mentioned, that depends on how other sites are linking to you. If you had 100 backlinks pointing to www.pinotgris.net, that variation of your domain would gain PR, while the version without the www would not. The solution is easy, just redirect the non www. version to the www. version, or vice-versa. The redirected version will show the PR of the site its redirected to.

No thank you because I know nothing and that site was very helpful RJ you see they have a piece of code we could add the fake pagerank to NP as a way for people to check their PR

K. Just added that tool to our Domain Services menu. www.namepros.com/fakepr.php

Helpful to me because I always have to search Google to find that site. :)
