The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

I think they are in some languages/regions more in fashion than in others.

I think 360 suffix is the biggest seller. But all sales are hard to achieve. It's not a business I'd invest in, personally. But SHOP360.COM has done pretty well selling them in the past. I don't know if they are still profitable.

probably a stupid question but, why 360 is so popular? is it because of the 360 degrees, or...?

0
•••
probably because it creates association to degrees and geometry. it may work pretty well with names that refer to things related to construction, architecture and geography

•••
maybe it also refers to a 360 degree knowledge of things, like 360 = an expert in something

Exactly. 360 stands (mostly) for virtual reality, 360ยฐ video, 360ยฐ photography...

Actually the term 360 became popular because of Anderson Coopers show on CNN which was named AC360. After the naming of this show the 360 use exploded in popularity.

@hookbox - Actually it was already popular long before AC360.COM was acquired and used by Anderson Cooper. SHOP360.COM has been selling them successfully for many years.

I am sure they have been selling them a long time but the CNN show was started in 2003 when it was just called 360 and in 2005 renamed AC360. When something like this is mainstream that is when everybody else jumps on board. This is the reason Shop360 was started in the first place. Shop360.com was registered in 2005 so who do you think actually started the trend. Obviously CNN started the trend and everybody else are just copycats.

@hookbox - But the owner of Shop360.com, Clark Siegelin, has been selling 360 domains longer than SHOP360.com has been registered. His 360INVESTMENTS.COM was registered in 2002. And I suspect he was selling 360 suffix domains before he registered this domain. This website even says they opened their doors in 1999. This predates the CNN programme. Clark is Mr 360 domains. He has sold more 360 suffix domains than anyone else and probably also for a greater value than anyone else (inflation adjusted).

I agree with you Stub that they have been selling 360 domains before AC360 was created but Hypersot asked why 360 became popular and that is where I still believe that popularity came from the CNN show. When a suffix like this is used for an extremely popular mainstream program it makes the demand of that suffix shoot through the roof.

@hookbox - I interpret it differently :) 360 suffixes were already popular due to the actions of Clark Siegelin and a couple of other visionaries. Culminating in the sale of AC360.com. "360" has several connotations which make it attractive to end users. I'm not saying the sale hasn't helped the 360 movement. It has, and has significantly improved the awareness of 360 domains. But they were not exactly lame ducks, before the sale of AC360.com. I just think it isn't fair to give AC most/all the credit for their success.

I don't give them all the credit but when something goes mainstream is when things explode. It reminds of Spotify who became very popular and sparked over 200 new companies that ended their names with -ify. Spotify wasn't the first to start the trend they were actually the 8th to use the suffix but they are the ones that exploded the use of -ify on the market and everyone else followed.
