In a cut and paste nutshell:

"Pool.com uses a 2-Phase Auction System for its Deleting Domains Service. Phase I is the Sealed Bid Auction, and Phase II is the Challenger Auction. "

Definitely an attempt to immediately raise prices on the intial bids. This means the $60 win will likely be more rare. To even be in the game on a higher profile name, you have to be within 20% of what you think the high bidder may bid, and it's not a proxy bid, but your starting bid.

Seems to me they are trying to get people to put in $100 plus starting bids to insure they are in the game for the final bid in case someone else bids more.

I won't buy in. My starting bids will still be the $60 minimum, so if you wan't to keep me out of the pool auctions start your bids at $80+ and make pool rich with the guaranteed extra $20 per name.

I have a feeling that is exactly whats behind this new "innovation".

well, I understand everyone's anger and frustration. but the fact is that pool has been losing market share. enom and namewinner are kicking them hard, so they can either react or join the breadline (or enlist, I suppose...)

I've been done with Pool for quite a while. I had gotten a couple of names from them, but after my credit card expiry date came I didn't bother to put my new card on file. Apparently... before the card expiry date came due I had bid on a domain name that was in auction and had gone several times higher then my $60 bid.

I got a rather to-the-point email today from them today demanding I update my credit card so they could charge me for this domain name. They stated that everyone else who had bid more didn't come through for them that I was the next in line and had won the domain. Whatever! The expiry date is 9-7-04 and now they demand that I pay the $60. There must be something in the water in Ontario if they think I'm going to pony up the money nearly a year later for something that I forgot all about and don't need anymore.

:D
