I can buy politicalreview.com for $3100 from buydomains.com. What do you guys think? Is it a good buy? I'm new to buying domain names and I was wondering how large the risks involved are. If I buy it now for $3100, is it likely that it stays at least above $3000? In other words, how much do I have to lose for this particular name. Also, if I buy the domain for $3100, I own it permanently but I still have to pay to keep the site operational, right? How much does that cost and do I keep paying to buydomains.com or somebody else? One last question, if or when I sell the domain name, what are the resale fees or commissions involved?

Thanks in advance,
mookimd

It isn't a bad name, but for $3,100 I think you can do better. BuyDomains has a lot of overpriced stuff. There is no guarantee that it will hold any value once you purchase it. The value of most names lie in a subjective gray area and the value/price is only really known once someone pays that amount!

Once you buy a name you don't have to pay the person you bought it from any more money in the future, you only have to pay the renewal costs at the registry, which are generally pretty minimal and depend on the extension. Usually they are in the range of around $10/year. That is different from the costs of hosting a website, which vary depending on what traffic you're expecting and the bandwidth you plan on using. Still, if you're paying a premium price for a domain this too is a lot less than the 1 time purchase price (hosting can be gotten as cheaply as free-$5/month for some plans).

If you decide to sell the name the commissions will depend on what venue you sell through. Most charge anywhere from between 10%-30% of the sale price. Just be sure to use an escrow service like escrow.com!

I actually have some spare politics domains you may find interesting that I'd be willing to part with for far less than 3 grand - I'll pm them to you in case you're interested.

I think if I saw this at auction for that price I would run a mile...a couple of hundred dollars at the absolute most is more my guess as there are barely any people searching for it...how would you even monetize it?

Much better for you would be to start off with cheap auctions at godaddy or somewhere, making the price range about 1-100 dollars in the advanced search.

You will get an idea of the price that some domains go for as well as the demand they create and you can actually pick up some nice names if you are willing to look through them...

What I am saying is, don't jump before you can even crawl ;)

Well, I think the price is end user pricing. Reseller would be between $800 and $1100 in my opinion.

It is a good domain but to get a profit you would need to find an end-user and they are not easy to find. Since the domain already has been on the marked for years it doesn't seems like there is a particular interest in this domain. With a 3K budget you can get a few good domains at reseller prices. That is a better option compared to buying a single decent domain at end-user price.

I agree with the other users; the price you paid is definitely on the high end of what I would consider a "deal." Package the domain as a website, though, and you'll find a market. Political-oriented sites are one niche that are always popular. If you try to resell the site, it's highly unlikely that you'll get the same price or better, but to the right end-user it's possible. It's a great blog name.

This is placed in the wrong thread. You can only post domains that you own or control in the appraisals thread.

ps. I have no similar domains to offer you, my post is totally neutral.
