Are singular domains like computer.com and car.com likely to rank high in search engines for "computers" and "cars"? I noticed alot of singular domains tend to rank high for their pluralized term on Google.

Both plural and singular "should" rank well, but the domain name is only Part of the reason for the ranking. Content, Links and other SEO things also matter for SERP's.
