I like the look and the feel of CMS, including Joomla and Mambo.

I have the option of switching my server at GoDaddy from Windows to Linux.

I made the change to Linux as I want to redo a website.

I am a newbie to this CMS, I have never used it but will teach myself.

My host, which is a GoDaddy reseller, has MAMBO and JOOMLA available.

Which is easiest to learn?

How hard are they to install?

Please, lets keep it to these to options. I know there is a host of other options out there but for the sake of confusion and sanity...for now lets just talk MAMBO or JOOMLA.

Joomla is based on Mambo, so Joomla is better. Recently, Joomla 1.5 was released.

As a Joomla user, I find it very easy to learn. It is very easy to work everything out in administrator panel.

To install, [in the case of cPanel], it's a simple 1, 2, 3 install. :tu: [Usually it's prebuilt installation.]

Okay, I am going to go with Joomla. That is already an option on GoDaddy's servers when I switch to a Linux server.

Question: When I attempted to load Joomla this a.m., it immediately wanted to know which website this was for. Indeed, I am going to be re-vamping a site, I'll teach myself Joomla. But should I make the distinction now when it prompts me or wait?

If I indicate now, does that mean I can edit in Joomla?

Even though the site and pages were done in MS publisher and frontpage?

This is my first go at this and I certainly don't want to screw things up. I don't need the site to crash.

THANKS! for the tips.

I did not know how much of a mess it would be.

I have no intention of carrying on with MS publisher and frontpage once I become proficient with Joomla.

A freind had recommended Limbo to learn because of a lesser learning curve but they are having trouble with their site.

My whole purpose of wanting to consider Joomla is I can not update my website on the go. I have to come home and access everything from this one computer that I have MS Publisher installed on. That is what I want to eliminate.

No good books on Joomla, got one on Mambo, but I know that was older.

Thanks for the tips.

Godaddy offers other cms solutions as well including the very powerful postnuke - which is the most secure cms on the market.

I use them all, and Joomla is okay but not very powerful when it comes to permission structures (locking down parts of the website to only certain users - ie - paid users, extra mods etc) whereas postnuke does it with amazing dexterity. Problem is postnuke is harder to learn, but in the end offers more variables than the other cms noted.

As well postnuke's ability to present catered content to your users on whatever section of your website is second to none via its theme/permission system.

Don't overlook the little guy!

Great choice. I don't know what you're using at home for a computer, but if you haven't given a Linux distribution a try, I highly suggest it. You can set up a local server easily, and it is much less painful than many people suggest. I am a user of Fedora Core 5 and Ubuntu, both of which are fantastic.

Fedora is an excellant distribution. However, if you want to learn linux but not ready to install it yet, you can try cygwin

You may even want to check out LiveCD's to get a feel for the environment.

Fedora Core 5 and Ubuntu, cygwin, LiveCD's....

HOLD IT, HOLD IT, HOLD IT!

GUYS, GALS, MY HEAD IS SPINNING!

All I wanted to originally know is which...Mambo or Joomla?

All the Linux, Unix, Ipsix, ninesix, Upix...way out of my league.

I installed Joomla on my GoDaddy (EaglesDomain) server...IT WAS A SNAP!

Once I changed to a Linux server, it was an already an added-on option. All I had to do was to choose this as an option and the server automatically installed it. Works flawlessly.

Figured out how to upload some different templates. Now just have to figure out how to manipulate them and change the graphics and the header. I'll just have to look into some forums and sites for tips.

It won't all come overnight (wish it would) but at least I'm learning something new. I have also been playing around with WikiMedia (wikidot.com...difficult to pick up but I LOVE IT!) and WordPress. So many options out there!

So Far, So....

Okay, struggling a little here and here and here...

But I'm liking it.

You can monitor my progress as I go along.

see www.tlddot.info/joomla

This will be a redo of my current site www.ceuq.com.

As you can see, quite a difference and I'm liking it.

Once completed, all I have to do is switch over to the correct domain which I think I can do.

All you Joomla Hacks out there...any pointers, feel free to pass them on!

Thanks! Not bad, if I say so myself, for learning, loading, and using in two days time. Far from an expert, but template very easy to use.

Okay, Back to work you lazy bums! :kickass:
