I almost posted this in appraisals, but I'm not really looking for a value. I doubt they have any value - yet. That said, if you'd like to share your thoughts based on your experience, please do.

So you know, I'm more into content than domain buying and selling. I'm a writer, but in the last year I've started picking up (after initially making a few rookie mistakes) domains I like. So far, all hand reg. Most domains I register relate to my main content subject area. Sometimes I register domains because I like them.

I'm also about to try my hand at starting a couple of affiliate sites.

Oh, and though most of my domains are dot coms, I really like dot tv. I figure in the near future, it's all going to blend together anyway. I can already surf the web on my tv and I can watch HBO on my laptop, so maybe pretty soon dot tv, dot com, ABC, NBC etc. will all be just different channels. No one will care about the extension.

I'd like to know if I'm on the right track. If my thinking, reflected in these domains, is correct. I'm also wondering what to do with them until I'm ready to either develop, sell or drop them.

CHGO tv I really like this one. Look at my name. Could be developed several ways: tourism, a youtube-type site for Chicago, a television or media outlet.

ShoeStores tv 1.2 million global searches, 673,000 local. I know it may not fit prefectly with the tv ext, but I seem to recall a shoe-related tv being sold earlier this year to a major retailer for a good price.

WannaSee tv This one I bought because I see it as a highly brandable domain. I like it. People actually say these words to each other, I think it's memorable and it rhymes. I could see a lot of possibilities for this. WannaWatch tv is porn, I don't really want to go there and I think mine is better.

What do you think?

...I really like CHGO(being from the windy city myself) and see the brandability for you in your line of work(if you blog about Chicago items). I recently grabbed Chicagoland in a different extension(along with Wrigleyville in the same different extension)and want to do something with these...

ShoeStores has a viable use to the right enduser, don't discount the power of a videocentric domain extension in selling one's wares.

WannaSee I guess may be your pet project as for myself I see an interesting challenge in the name. But brand is the buzzword in today's climate and anything can take off if handled intelligently.

Congrats on your acquisitions and good luck with your venture(s).

You are on the wrong track! Who cares what the global search is, its how many end users exist! Your keywords are awful and will result in $0 return. Most end users are small businesses and none of them from my experience would even look at a .tv

Ok, two very different takes on this. I appreciate both responses.

I guess I'm not completely getting keyword domains. ShoeStores is really the only one I thought of as a keyword domain. WannaSee I registered because I thought it might make a nice video on demand site or something. Chgo I registered because it's an abbreviation.

But ShoeStores I though might make a nice affiliate site for myself or someone else. If nothing else and maybe initially, I thought I'd park it or put adsense for domains on it and hope for clicks.

I feel I'm still missing something.

Your searching in "broad" terms not [exact match] terms.

[Shoe Stores]
The actual number is 74K with a local search of 60K. The
CPC is $ 1.55 with high competition.

[Wanna See]

People may "say" it but they do not search the term with G[][]G.
Actual search results: global @ 390, local @ 36 with a CPC @ .10

All of these could be developed, marketed, branded and yea they
could succeed. Any name with development, marketing and branding
would have the same chance ..... almost any name .... but you get
my point?

These are not good choices for the dot TV extension. Nor are they
"re seller" material.

-$75.00

More people need to understand that in general available domains have low demand and low value. Also, as was stated above... forget about search volumes. The reality is that for .TV these domains are horrible.

You should be shooting for names more like "shoes" or "see" or "chicago" in this extension if you want some gold for your account. Try to remember that there's a reason Danica Patrick has made 12 million this year and a HUGE part of that reason is millions upon millions of registrations JUST LIKE THESE. Don't feel bad, we've all done it. Now learn from this mistake and go make some money.

Grace delete ASAP and quit registering domains and start buying them. IMO.

I think I see. Far fewer searches than I thought with lots of competition for potential clicks and it's a tv. So, on an adsense or domian re-selling basis, not much value. Potential value, like most other domains, if developed properly.

I guess I don't get why something like powwows tv sells for $350 but shoestores isn't good.

I must admit, I really think in terms of development and possibilities rather than in domaining terms

MicroGuy - Ok, I'm starting to see it. So this is my second round of rookie mistakes - though trust me, not as bad as the first.

I've read some of your past posts about buying domains rather than registering them. I've been thinking about that lately and I think maybe the next time I buy, rather than spending $40 - $70 registering domains, I might just buy one domain for the same price.

A $70 domain might not be exactly what you want either... just saying. Might make more sense to explore which domains are worth how much before spending another cent, considering you probably don't want to be 'third time lucky'.

Read, read, read. And then read some more, and you'll start seeing a pattern, then decide how best you want to profit from this pattern. Then spend.

If you really want to play the reselling game, pick a great domain between $1k-$5k reseller and try and flip it to an end user for 5x or more. That would be better in the long run, renewals add up, specially if you only have 'hard to sell' domains.

Alright, I think I see.

Chgo I want, just because I want it.

ShoeStores I took thinking that because it wasn't being used in a lot of extensions right now (which probably should have told me something) that I'd take a shot at turning it into an affiliate site. Do a feed, maybe some shoe-related content and see if I couldn't make some sales. I thought it might be worth the $12 investment.

As for WannaSee - I guess I thought some end-user might think it was a cute or catchy name and might wanna use it. (Sorry for the bad joke) I do understand why for domaining purposes it's not attractive.

I have been thinking recently about no longer hand registering domains. What I would like is to grow my content site's audience and to also start up and grow a few affiliate sites that might eventually provide a nice income stream. I think what I might do is focus on my content site and start an affiliate site, not buy domains for 6-8 mths, save my money and then buy one nice domain and either turn it into a good affiliate site or try to flip it.

If you're still reading this thread, let me throw this at you.

I also have DrinkRecipes tv and ChicagoDining tv. One of my content subject areas is restaurant/bar training and the other is Chicago. I may never use DrinkRecipes, but it does fall directly under one of my subject areas. I thought maybe video bartending tips etc.

ChicagoDining is kind of a crossover. Will I use it? Maybe.

Are these any better for my purposes and would they ever be worth anything to anyone else?

The reason I'm not commenting on your domains is basically because they're not bad, but you'd be tough put to get an ROI out of them w/o development.

Anything that you're passionate about developing is a good buy.

:)

Straight away values equal zero plus negative $$ for registration. An appraisal based on development isn't fair because, well, the domains aren't developed.

As with any extention, I'd stick to aftermarket purchasing for favorable results!

Totally agree with the above comments

Wait !

You are NOT spending $40-$70 at a registrar are you?
OMG
please tell me I have mistaken your comment about
$40-$70 to register names.

You can reg .TVs for $10.99 at name [] com. Dynadot is $9.99. These are first year prices but you have a year to evaluate. I'll check but one of them allows "tasting". You may want to consider this to try and save $ on bad registrations. Tasting allows you to pay a small fee to "return" the name and get the bulk of your reg fee back.

As reseller names these are all worth $0. Good names are going reseller for under $100 (where my definition of Good won't be the same as others).

Rule #1 for your own use of domain if you plan to develop or grow. If your market will all reach you through posts on Facebook via tweets with links - the domain doesn't matter at all as long as it presents your view.

If you want to get people to re-visit you need content AND a minimum of (1) Something memorable or (2) Unique.

Why?

1) You want them to remember
2) If they forget you want them to have limited search results so they can find it via google.

CHGO tv

I find this hard to remember. If you are serious about developing you'd be better with MyKindaTown.TV or something that won't be forgotten. WindyCityMedia.TV even. Sure they're longer but they're more memorable than CHGO. If you want short and brandable - then I'm sure you can think of something better.

ShoeStores.TV

The plural kills this. ShoeStore.TV is great. ShoeStores.TV is mediocre unless you are planning to create a vertical market platform. I doubt anyone is.

WannaSee tv

I don't like this as even a brandable because there's nothing "clear" about it. Wannasee is not a used enough form to be obvious imho.

I don't like any of them for development or resale.
