Registered phrasebooks.mobi . A phrase book is "a book containing common expressions in a foreign language along with their translation", Wordnet. I was on the fence about this reg, but with the $9.75 special that's going on at Whiz.in. I'm planning to put up a mobile optimized version of the Creative Commons licensed "phrasebooks" at Wikitravel, here. Please give your opinion about this reg below. :) And cheers, it's my first .MOBI! ;)

Congrats on your first .MOBI, edjackiel. :gl:

Your unique development plans may one day bring value to this mediocre raw domain name registration, IMHO. :talk:
Best of Luck.

If it is your first domain it is a really good one IMO, well done!, looking at what some other people have registered lately, puts them to absolute shame! Good luck!

Rep+'d for Jeff and panman.

I would love to have a few more comments and feedback, even though I have already started to develop the pages. ;)

Phrase + Books -- 2 very, very common words. I feel the same way about it as the above posters. With unique and compelling content, something it sounds like you're already working on, I think you have a great name and a very niche product -- something which should fight off competition allowing you a bigger market share.

Best of luck with it :)

Reece, thanks for your $0.02 ;) Rep added.

Development is already well underway, and I may have a sneak peek up for everybody to look at soon. It will be targetted at native English speaking travellers. The first mobile-optimized phrasebook that will be made available is for French. It is time consuming work to format these phrasebooks for mobile, but I am already a quarter of the way to the first release. :red: Advertising opportunites will be available.

In the province of Manitoba, Canada, we're gaining approximately 20,000 new immigrants each year who's first language is not English.

There's alot of potential endusers for something like this. It's a great idea and will help improve the lives and travel of many.

make the domain in a foreign language then and offer translations of phrases. If people dont speak English how will they find the domain written in English initially?

If it would be possible to pull this together for an translation site, this would be a tremendous boost.

Rather than carry a PDA, a dictionary, a phrasebook, and maps etc, it would be great to just tote the camera and cell to destinations.

Now, make it a voice recognition system...don't understand someone, have them speak slowly and clearly into phone, then you take it back and say 'english' AND THERE YOU HAVE IT! Translation.

Damn, I've got great ideas but no clue how to do it.

You may be suprised how many people travel in and out of the country every day for vacations, business trips, etc. The idea is that they whip out their mobile phone impromptu while away from home, at any train station, restaurant, hotel, etc. etc. It will be a great convenience, maybe even a life (or face) saver. I believe this is a worthwile niche to target.

In case there has been any misunderstanding amongst us, the site is aimed at native English-speaking travellers going to foreign destinations with a different prevailing language.

Circa1850, thanks for your enthusiasm and the ideas. I'll take these into consideration. The translation part may be do-able. But the voice recognition concept is probably very well out of the scope of this site though. And it definitely won't happen until the site is larger and .mobi is more mature. :|

If and when I find it, I will locate a site I found that is downloadable to a PDA. It was a talking dictionary and phrasebook. The cost per language was $49 per language.

The reason I mentioned this is it could be a model for what phrasebooks.mobi could be. Say for instance you want Spanish, or Russian. The words and phrases would appear in your language (you want English-Russian). It not only shows you how to say it in Russian, tapping it will provide a native speakers voice saying it in Russian. The exact opposite works for the Russian-English text and speech. These programs are priceless and so easy to use.

Most cell phones have built in memory and optional memory cards. I think something like this could be a stellar site. Now if we can just convince all the cellular companies to come to their senses and stop charging roaming charges...world wide.
