Hello I have a backorder for a domain that I want very bad and it say Pending Deletion on 12/6/08 9am on Namejet. I also have a backorder at snapnames.com and pool.com. Is that accurate when it say it will be deleted at 9am. When its deleted can I register it at Godaddy.com or just wait till one of those sites get the backorder for me?

Hard to say...seems like anything goes with some registrars these days :| , nothing would surprise me anymore.

As long as you have it backordered you may have a chance, there are private companies catching names aswell and if its in pending delete it'll be first come first served. (rather than passed to a drop company to sell)

Good luck :tu: - let us know if you get it

The drop starts at 2pm EST (GMT -5) on the day NameJet says to backorder by, and usually lasts about an hour and a half. If you backordered it on all three drop services, there's a 99% chance one of them will get it, but you may end up bidding against others.

Unless the domain has a really, really low value and no traffic, I doubt you'll be able to get it by hand as there are a few dozen companies catching drops with their own software such as eNom, BuyDomains, Answerable, etc. There are also a handful of guys on the forums doing it.

If its pending deletion what time do they drop? So if it drop can I register it at say godaddy?

You never know the exact time it will drop. The registry starts releasing them at random at the time I mentioned, and since there are usually 30k+ domains on any given day the drop can take at least an hour, and if there are a lot of domains dropping that day it can take two or three hours.

The only thing you can do if you want to register it by hand and you don't have software is to keep performing the search over and over again until it shows as available. I wouldn't try it at Godaddy though, because their checkout process is long as they try to upsell you on a lot of different products. I would try it at Dynadot or Moniker.

The big three you already backordered at are extremely good at catching, so I wouldn't bother trying anywhere else. The only other one was ClubDrop, but they sold out to NameJet, and eNom's registrars that were being used to catch for that service are now used to catch for NameJet. You've got your bases covered.

Just so you know, unless you remove the backorders, there's no point to try to catch it by hand... you have zero chance. Just wait for the big boys to catch it, and hope nobody else bids you up.

Snapnames.com acquired the domain name but its in a auction, how do I find out how many people that in the auction?

On your auction platform, click on the high bidder's name--that will bring up the bidding list (pop-up window).

If it's a large list, the name will probably go for a few thousand, though not everyone will place additional bids.

If snapnames has already caught the name and its only you and another person in it then its now a private auction - ie: nobody else can join in.
(is the other person halvarez by any chance ??)

under the status heading does it show "you, in green" or "outbid in red" ?

If its green then you are the highest bidder at the moment.

Just someone that seems to be in loads of snapnames drops, most times he does'nt bother to bid any higher so i guess he's just playing a numbers game.

I'v been in a few with just me and him where I got the domain for the minimum...one or two nice little earners :tu:

is it halvarez you're in with ...and are you the current highest bidder ?

Most people - wait - until the last few minutes to start bidding, so make sure you're there at the end to start bidding...and keep your wallet handy ;)

If this is the same auction I'm watching (don't worry, I'm no threat), it is getting hot and heavy.

Very informative post - someone should rep you for it!

(I would but must have done so elsewhere recently because I can't.)

Am I lost, crazy, or did I miss one of the posts? If YOU backordered (paid/preordered for them to try to get the domain for you), with Snapnames, how did it end up at auction?

As far as why people auction as the last minute the answer is obvious: so that can win the item. It's the same method whether it is ebay, painting auction, or DN auction. The experienced buyers wait until the end for a couple of reasons.
One is that if you bid early, you are just adding one more person (yourself) to the number of people who are driving up the price. Two, you are not protecting your bid position by bidding early - it doesn't matter how many times you bid, the ONLY thing that matters is that you are the LAST bid in. Also, you can let other bidders tired themselves out (this applies more so to live auctions) by bidding with each other.... once it narrows down the field, you can THEN start bidding FRESH.

On ebay its obvious why wait til the last few seconds, so you won't have time to place another bid after theirs. eBay used to have that thing where if a last second bid comes in right before bid closes, the bidding (auction) would automatically extend. ebay does not do that anymore. I have won several ebay items by pushing that "bid" button at the '9 seconds' left mark. Which of course means nobody would have time to counterbid by the time my bid posts with 2 seconds left in the auction.

That's just the way it goes in the bidding wars.

If more than one person backorders the name it goes to (private) auction.
