Information about Pay-Per-Call
Pay-per-call is a perfect fit for .mobi as it is a new marketing avenue that targets local searches, connecting potential customers with local businesses via the phone. Pay Per Call works in a similar way to Pay Per Click, except, as its name implies, you pay per phone call you receive from a potential customer, rather than per click through to your website.

Wikipedia page regarding Pay-Per-Call
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pay-per-call

A good article explaining the basics and potential of pay per call:
Pay-Per-Call: A New Avenue for Search Marketers
Because of the high value merchants place on phone leads, they are willing to pay a higher bid price. Pay-per-call rates can range from $2 per call to $20 a call or more, with the bid price depending on the category and ad position.

Another use of the term "Pay-per-call"
Pay-per-call is also a term that has been associated with 900 numbers and the fees associated with "adult" services, or "chat" lines.
From the FCC website:
Pay-per-call services are a particular type of information service. They are offered through 900 numbers and always carry a fee greater than the cost of simply transmitting the call. The fee may be a per-minute charge or a flat fee. Pay-per-call services can include “adult” services, “chat” lines, and psychic advice. Link

Companies involved in the "pay-per-call" business include:

Google
Google is testing a pay-per-call feature in ads appearing on its search engine results pages. Link

AOL
Last week, AOL became the largest online service to offer the comparatively new pay-per-call format to search advertisers. Pay-per-call is rapidly gaining traction among search marketers, especially those targeting a local audience, and if you're not familiar with the format, it's worth a look. Link

Other pay per call companies include: Estara, Ingenio, uPayPerCall, thinkingVOICE, Miva

Future prospects of Pay-Per-Call:
Pay-per-call is widely thought to be a powerful local marketing channel in the making. A JupiterResearch study found almost half of small businesses are receptive to pay-per-call online advertising. Kelsey Group, meanwhile, predicted the pay-per-call market will grow to between $1.4 and $4 billion by 2009. Link

PasswordByCall Reports Record Sales in Asia
http://www.emediawire.com/releases/2007/1/emw494800.htm

Global Phone Billing Solution is popular with Asian surfers.

London, UK (PRWeb) January 4, 2007 -- Global pay-per-call billing company PasswordByCall has reported a 180% increase in sales from Asia during the last year.

Typically the payment cycle with premium rate numbers is between 45-90 days
The company says its global phone billing solution is proving to be particularly popular with Asian surfers, most of whom do not have a credit card.

"The telephone makes for an ideal billing mechanism since it so ubiquitous" observes Marc Jarrett, their Business Development Manager "Web content owners can use us to sell digital content such as information, music, software, games or subscriptions to a global audience"

IP Geo-Targeted in 37 languages, surfers are invited to call a premium rate telephone number in order to receive the password needed in order to gain access to the desired content.

Local domestic premium rate numbers are employed for all countries that support them, surfers need to make a regular IDD (International Direct Dial) call in those that do not.

"We are practically the only solution that allows content owners to make money from China" comments Jarrett "credit card penetration there is still negligible - but practically everyone has access to a phone".

The company has interconnect revenue share agreements in place with over 50 telcos worldwide, is free to set up, and pays its clients bi-weekly. Customers can track their sales from over 240 countries in real-time on the web.

"Typically the payment cycle with premium rate numbers is between 45-90 days" says Jarrett "We do not expect our customers to wait that long for their money, so we factor payment and pay them long before we get paid".

The Swiss owners of PasswordByCall have been pay-per-call pioneers since 1994 and have paid over $250m to their partners during that time.

Agreed. I sent the auction to a ton of pay per call companies to get their interest, but none of them bit. I imagine it's because they didn't know what the hell .mobi is yet. Probably sold too early, but I wanted to get some money coming in.
