I just now found out that PayPal offers a security key for added protection.

Even though I am very disappointed recently with PayPal in the way they handle some things related to scammers, I am happy to see this new security key they are offering.

Check it out Here: https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=xpt/cps/securitycenter/general/PPSecurityKey-outside

I am going to order mine first thing when I wake up tomorrow!, it's only $5. How could I refuse the added protection to my account and a new, cool keychain.. :)

It also works with Ebay and they are partnering with VeriSign so that it can be implemented on a number of websites around the world.

I would love it if this device worked for all of my websites that I log into, including NamePros, DP, MySpace and everything else. Wouldn't it be great if they all agree to use this device and make it even cheaper for their members! (Although 5 bucks is pretty cheap IMO)

It says the $5 price tag is intoductory and I believe it, better get yours now.

I really think this will do well, what are your opinions? Is it hackproof? Do you think it's a step in the right direction?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

Much better and more secure products are being used by banks around the world.

Check out the NatWest UK card reader (for online transactions)

That thing is very interesting, and somewhat confusing. Not nearly as user-friendly as the PP Security Key. Also, how could that be implemented on social sites, email accounts, forums and such? Pretty cool though, thanks for pointing it out:)

Trouble

Can you handle the key crashing at the very same moment that you absolutely, positively need to access your account? I can just see the blood vessels popping out of my neck now.

Anyway, I think I will wait for the crash test dummies to give their reviews about the key before I order one.

The purpose of post was that similar and more secure things are already available in Europe.

Between: It is not as confusing as it looks, I say more secure because it not only generate the number to be entered on website but it also verifies the debt card as well. It is like you have swap your debt card even for online transactions. In addition to it, it double checks like first the number will be generated on website that you have to enter in your card reader then another number will be generated by card reader that you have enter into website. I am not sure if it work outside the Europe.

I don't think that we need extra security for email and social network websites. Imagine you can't check your email just because you damaged your devices and you have to wait 7days until paypal delivers another device. :). More security needed when money is involved like paypal account, bank accounts, Google checkout.

What I'm imagining is one company contolling and marketing all of these devices, say VeriSign to hundreds of different websites. Hopefully, in the future and in my mind, if you loose or break your key you could just call the company to order your new key and give some sort of voice only password to temporarily deactivate the key feature untill your new key arrives.

I think items like the one you presented and paypal is offering are only the start in online account security. I forsee even more high-tech security keys, including figerprint and retnal scanners in our near future. Alot of people need to feel secure with there online accounts and business's want them to feel secure.

Just ordered mine. It's $5 for a little added piece of mind. What's most convenient is their statement that my account is protected from fraudulent payments made from my account.
So far i've always had 2 emails linked to my account; one that i handed out to buyers making the payments - for this one, the password is so complicated and screwed up that not even i remember it, and the second email is never handed out. With the key, it might get a lot easier for me :)

Have you gotton yours yet Mike?

I should get mine in the mail tomorrow, it will be the 11th business day since I ordered so I'm hoping to see it in my box tomorrow.

BTW: I emailed GoDaddy asking them to contact VeriSign and PayPal so that they can include and use this key on there site too. I would LOVE to add this security to my domain name account.

Also, here is a video I found with the president of PP on YouTube.

And here is a very informative video from a PP team member.

Apparently, if you loose it you will get a bunch of pre-set security questions to answer, so you won't be locked out.. which is nice.

I sent them a relatively straight up email yesterday and .. got it today. I don't think they shipped it overnight, but it seems that everytime i start bitching about something, the situation magically resolves itself

Getting ready to activate the little sucker on PayPal and eBay now :)

I think it is still only available in the US, which needs to be changed IMO. This thing needs to go global, it has been around for almost 2 years now from what I can find. They should have all the bugs out by now.

I sent this email to GoDaddy:

Hello,

In light of recent domain name scammer and thief activity I would like to see GoDaddy do more to protect its customers.

PayPal has a new security key that I would like to see GoDaddy implement on their website. The key can already be used on both PayPal and Ebay. PayPal has also partnered with VeriSign so that this key can be used on thousands of websites all around the net.

The key is a small, light key chain that has a button and a little screen with 6 digits. Whenever you log into your online account you enter your normal user name and password, then you press the button on the key and enter the current 6 digit code, which changes every 30 seconds.

PLEASE CONTACT VERISIGN AND GET THIS KEY FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS!

You company should feel obligated to do all it can to protect your customers, this is a HUGE step and possibly the solution!
Customers can buy the key from PayPal and it only cost $5, for added peace of mind.

The same key can be used on any site that offers the service. One key can potentially unlock thousands of online accounts from bank accounts, forums, registrars, bookkeeping, social sites and MORE.

Please be the leader and innovator of the domain name industry registrars, contact VeriSign or PayPal and start implementing this key asap!

Your Customer,
Richard Buchanan

Feel free to send one of your own or copy my words or edit it a bit, whatever you want. But if you too think it would be nice for GD to use this key, PLEASE let them know! Send it to [email protected].

:)

Richard,

this should really be done in form of a "petition" almost. If anyone can set up a site where we collectively sign as domainers, this has probably a bigger chance to make it to Bob's desk than if each and everyone of us sends a single email.
(just a thought).

The GreenGambler initiative. :) :tu: Keep the Green Light on your accounts, don't Gamble with your assets. - ok, going a bit wild here.

Anyways, i think we all know that it could only be a huge benefit to have additional security in place and as most reputable registrars and other sites are already verisign certified, the implementation of the key fob can only be a small step.

Great effort with the letter to GD though. Rep added.

I love the way you think! I'll get right on that, after I finish a couple other things, so it will be a couple hours.

Any reccomendations as to the most reputable petition site to use?

EDIT:
I just saw your post, weblord, I'll use them and post when it is done.
