I just now found out that PayPal offers a security key for added protection.

Even though I am very disappointed recently with PayPal in the way they handle some things related to scammers, I am happy to see this new security key they are offering.

Check it out Here: https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=xpt/cps/securitycenter/general/PPSecurityKey-outside

I am going to order mine first thing when I wake up tomorrow!, it's only $5. How could I refuse the added protection to my account and a new, cool keychain.. :)

It also works with Ebay and they are partnering with VeriSign so that it can be implemented on a number of websites around the world.

I would love it if this device worked for all of my websites that I log into, including NamePros, DP, MySpace and everything else. Wouldn't it be great if they all agree to use this device and make it even cheaper for their members! (Although 5 bucks is pretty cheap IMO)

It says the $5 price tag is intoductory and I believe it, better get yours now.

I really think this will do well, what are your opinions? Is it hackproof? Do you think it's a step in the right direction?

Seriously though, while the avatar is almost mesmerizing, it's equally nauseating.

LOL, I like his avatar, it really shows how I feel sometime.. lol

I still have not gotton my PP key.. I'm kinda feeling left out. I called PayPal again, Saturday and they said that if I don't have it by tomorrow, Tuesday, to give them a call back. I wonder why mine is taking so dang long to ship. I hope I get it soon.

I sent an email to PayPal asking whether the battery can be replaced by the key holder. Here's the response:

Hello my name is Kevin, I am happy to assist you with your question
regarding Security Key.

The Security Key is not waterproof and is not constructed to be opened
for maintenance purposes. With proper care and maintenance, you can
expect your Security Key to last about three years - which is the
expected lifespan of the battery. The battery cannot be replaced.

Sincerely,
Kevin

:td: Meaning: every 3 years (approximately), we'll have to contact PP to get a new key? Not that i'm too stingy to pay $5 every 3 years, but a little more thought towards the end user would have made a lot of sense to me. I guess, once the key runs low on battery, i'll try to change it anyways. What's to loose? :hehe:

I think it's another way for them to make more money and boost their stocks. Extra security like this should be free.

So True

I'm not about to give PayPal one more device to help keep me from my money... As well, if (When) this does get hacked (somehow), it gives them one more finger to point at me (you) as the culpable party for my (your) loss of money.

Nope - the best defense here is giving PayPal only what it needs, nothing more.

At first blush it does indeed sound like a good idea, however, it's just one more step you have to take to get your money.

This reminds me of when I bought a security digital key for my vehicle. It was a reassuring device until one day I inserted the digital key and it didn't work. There's nothing like sitting on a darkened street in Oakland at night cursing at a little plastic key. Oh, and the company that sold it to the new car dealer who then sold it to me had gone out of business months earlier (no one had bothered to notifiy me). I had to call an independent company the next day to take the entire until out ($65). Once bitten . . .

That said, I am asking myself what I could do on the spot if the paypal key should not work? Call paypal and wait for another replacement one? What's to prevent an unscrupulous person from doing the same? I think I'll just wait until a few crash test dummies have reported back on their experiences.

I have mine now and I realy like it.

It is very convienient and if you loose it all you do is answer security questions to access your account. No sitting on hold waiting for PayPal, you can fix the situation yourself.

I think that most PayPal account hacks come from phishing emails or keyloggers. I would think that if a scammer has aquired a large list of stolen accounts and one of them isn't allowing them access, they would just go on to the next account, not dig further to find out what the answers to your questions are, or call paypal pretending to be you. That's a whole lot of trouble for a balance that they aren't even sure what is.

I'm happy I have my security key and I'll post here the first time it gives me the slightest bit of touble. (other than bulky pockets..) lol

I have had a few of these in the past.. I have one from my employer ,paypal, my bank and 2 hospital systems our physicians practice at . Im in I.T and i have to say these are the next best thing to retina scans at this time. I think skeptics will always be skeptics.. but until someone cracks the algorithm and then gets you normal login info your safe :D but as it stands now they work.. bottom line

and only $5 is a great deal.. our company 500+ employees pays $50 a piece

I was visiting a friend earlier and showed them my new key. He said that his old company used something similar too access the company website from home. He said they had to pay $25 for replacement keys if they were lost or broken.

In all the scenarios of safety that i played through my head when i ordered that thing, the one thing i didn't consider is that there's still a server sitting on the other side, evaluating whether i'm the real deal. Obviously, I am...but the server doesn't seem to be! :|
