I have been having quite a bit of activity with my .tv domains lately. I put a a four figure sale and a five figure sale into escrow last week. I countered a few additional offers too.

I believe there are many positive indicators for the .tv extension, most importantly, "The Oprah Effect." If you haven't visited own.tv yet, I hope that you will. Sure, for the most part it currently redirects to her main website, but there are some positive indicators. For instance, their careers section links directly to own.tv.

It is my understanding that the network officially launches on 1 January 2011. I expect own.tv will harness the power of the internet and will bring real change to the way millions of people view programing. I believe that it will be far more interactive than we have yet to see. And if the nice folks at Harpo Productions see fit to continue to build Own.tv as THE online destination, then .tv will have much to be grateful for. May 2011 bring health, happiness and success to my fellow NPers.

Great post Claude!

I have a little nugget for all the people out there who keep saying .TV has been around for 10 years but the extension supposedly hasn't gone anywhere.

Was the technology available and cheap enough for the "regular" internet user to create and broadcast television, shows, programs or clips online? Did we have small, cheap digicams? Or what about computers and hardware to handle huge video editing programs? What about hosting plans for video sites 10 years ago? Were highspeed broadband connections wide spread 10 years ago? Did we have websites and CMS's that would make it easy to start a website with original content?

Want me to go on?

I am pretty sure most of you will agree that the answer to all questions above is NO! Times have changed and a new era is rising. Multimedia and video is here to stay, text and images are slowly becoming of secondary importance.

If you still think .TV is only a niche it's time to wake up. More and more websites incorporate videos in their daily content. Text won't disappear, but it will become secondary to video. Should I mention CNN? NYTimes? NBA? MLB? MTV?

Don't tell me the content and the usage of media/video hasn't changed on the websites mentioned above. Archive.org is your friend if you're in doubt!

If someone wants to start a video/media related website today, what should stop them from grabbing a .TV? Why would anyone want to pay big bucks for a semi-crappy, overpriced .com domain? Nothing, and it's all about awareness. As soon as more people in the media industry know about .TV, they will slowly forget about .com, .co or whatever else you want to throw into the mix.

Anyways, I've got .TV's to develop so I'm off ;)

On a little sidenote to all phone surfers - who wants to scroll around on a tiny iphone screen while reading an article when you can watch everything in a 2 minute video clip? Think about it!
