Can someone please explain me what exactly the number is that overture shows? So far I have not been able to find one unregistered domain that has an overture rating. Does overture only show a number if the domain is registered, or does it also show numbers if the domain is not registered yet?
Thanks.

I am pretty sure that they do.

Thanks Kodeking.

So that could explain it. But it is already the 13th today. I am sure 2 days ago the values were still there. Is this possible. An other domain I have still has it's value.

And isn't it strange that it would go from 38 to 0 just like that? I think the number for november was showing first, which was 38. For december it is 0 suddenly.

because there are no one doing search with ext for the past month.

I understand, but does it make sense that it would drop from 38 to 0? I can understand a rise or drop, but this doesn't seem logical to me.

Perhaps the OVT month changed/updated from November to December 2003, I believe this was done recently so that could explain it.

Right. These are simply search requests.
If I go to OVT today and enter "msnenteraiment.com" (with extension) 38 times, you will likely see those results in their January 2004 month update.
B-)

So that would mean that ovt means nothing? I could get any domain to have an ovt of 2000, it would only take a few hours! Is this true?

pascal no they do not reset.
First of all Overture only return results for over 25 and above.
And every month between 10-15 th day they update their stats for the previous month. Thats why.

But it means that for the next month the ovt will be 0 for this domain. Is this correct?
So it could be 24 but it still shows 0. This means that it has become a lot less valuable then with ovt 38.

Currently its showing Overture results for December. A few days ago it still had November resules. It says at the top what month it for, and it updates around this time of month usually.

Buying any domains based on low Overture numbers is particularly risky. The value of a name shoud not be solely on what Overture says, especially if the name is recently expired. Numbers of 25-50 often only indicate domain speculators checking on a domain prior to the drop.

Also these number are very easily manipulated. You can go to altavista and search for a domain, hit your reload button 25 times and have an Overture domain+ext result next month. So buyer beware always. True type-ins can only be measured by actual stats.

Okay, thanks. It's clear to me now.
So if a domain is parked I would have to ask for screendumps of the stats? But still these can be manipulated I think.

This is true. Oveture number can only be an indicator of "possible" type-ins when not manipulated by scripts or other resellers. It's typical that names that recently expired will have minor OT numbers just from scripts/resellers researching them before the drop.

I wrote an article about how to estimate type-ins based on Overture results here
http://www.namefaqs.com/question/qstId/28.html

I'll repeat though that OT numbers are easy manipulated and should not be relied upon! :D

Yes, screen captures of the stats will usually do the trick. Of course anything can be manipulated, so always do your research to independently verify where traffic might be coming from.

If it's being represented as an established/former site, check the search engines to see if there are existing links pointing to the site. Go to archive.org and see what the site was and why people would be going to it. These steps only take a couple of minutes and can often save you the displeasure of buying an overhyped property.
