Hi all,

I use this Keyword Selector Tool to find out which terms/expressions are massively typed in search engines.

The question is, if there is one expression with a considerable amount of searches and a good extension (com, net, org or info) is available for that exact term (or separated by hyphens), is it worth to register it?

To make it practical, here comes a real example:

"Woman and car" is an expression with 165,000 searches and the following domain names are available:

woman-and-car.com
womanandcar.net
womancar.net

Im not going to reg any of those, but for similar cases, would it be worth a try? Both for reselling and developing?

Comments are welcome, I think this is an interesting topic.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

Only if the expression is well known and commonly used. In that case you'd be likely to get some type-in traffic, plus if you marketed the site, the name would be easy-to-remember. I think without hyphens and with the .com extension would be best, IMHO. Random search words (even highly searched words) put together as a domain name don't usually yield much traffic despite what OVT may show, at least in my experience. Good luck.

It's a good name for SEO (the hyphens help too). You may get some return if you manage to get a nice position in the search engines.

I have heard that if its short, it will result in type-in traffic otherwise it will bring in more SE traffic.

Good Luck with the name!

If I am building a web site and im targeting keywords that are present in the domain name.. hypens would be a plus when it comes to search engines.

I also look at the number of pages on google. One thing is that if you have multiple words, then put a hyphen between them to get an idea of how good the words go together. "Potato School" gets 7,280,000 pages while "Potato-School" only gets 452 and so I wouldn't recommend PotatoSchool.com. Additionally, people use numbers for all sorts of wierd reasons and so don't use the number of pages on google as an indicator of popularity. I tend to think that aroun 50000 pages is a good sign that the term is an indicator of a possible good domain name.

A thing I have also found with overture is that some terms are popular one month and not the next. This can be very annoying.

Vurg:
it works in the other side, i mean, no body do a search on 'potato-school' but rather 'potato school', and doing the search on 'potato school' returns potato school as well potato-school websites/contents, hyphens dont get you lower in SE, the only bad hing with hyphens is when people type directly the address in address bar, its easier to type potatoschool.com rather than potato-school.com, and worst with some exmples like potato-school-in-the-town.com

if you plan on developing, I'd recommend registering the top two domains over the latter since they contain all the keywords
