Organizing your domain portfolio?

I'm looking for an easy way to organize my portfolio to keep track of which domains i own and at which registrars they are residing and also to keep track of where they are parked.

That DRT software is quite expensive and i downloaded the trial and i find it very hard to use secondly my drive was doing overtime when i checked out a videotutorial.

I just need a simple and effective solution for this. I have no experience with excell and i have tried this before once with something else and i also found that solution hard to use.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know because i'm sick and tired to print out pages and scribbling any new additions to the lists, turning it into a mess again.

Is there a way to create my own domain manager list?
What do i need to make such a easy to use and editable list?

DRT really isnt that hard to use once you get used to it, but yes it is a bit pricey

i think best bet is to make a simplistic excel database, all you need is 3 columns, domain name, registrar and expiry date

then get excel to sort by expiry date, and when you renew a domain then make the change on the database

should be very simple

im sure there are domain management programs out there tho, so maybe someone can help you out with a specific program

Ya, Excel isn't that hard to use at all if you limit the number of columns. If you want I can send you a really simple version of what I use for my domains in Excel, and you can just replace the domains with your own. PM me if interested.

I use wordpad. I have a separate file for my domains, wanted domains and websites. My domains are separated by registrar and in alphabetical order. I color code/bold/underline things if I want them to stand out. Every couple months I go to each registrar in my file and check which domains are near expiration. I sort names manually. IDs/passwords stay in my head.

It's surprisingly easy once you get a template figured out. :alien:

I am in the process of consolidating my names to GoDaddy so I won't have to deal with 12-14 different registrars (it used to be over 20!) I park almost everything at Sedo but that's gotta change soon! :yell:

Use excel or if you can't afford it or don't have it on your PC, you can download OpenOffice.org for free.

domaintools has a portfolio manager too,so you could just take a look and see if it meets your needs.

Thanks guys, i checked out domaintools.com but all i could find was domain monitor but that didn't work properly since it shows to many (1 alone is already to many) n/a notices.

I'll give excell a try and download openoffice to see if this works out for me.
You have a PM Tom :) I'm interested in that file you use.

Yes, that is also an option only you need to have an hosting account set up for this...plus i had problems figuring out how to install it since of my superb lack of knowledge of server/database administration and installations

Secondversion was able to help at some point but at that time i had other ideas for my hosting account. And still have...

I'm trying out the Excell solution and will see if this works out for me.

Thanks for the suggestion though :tu:

I use a PHP/MySQL solution similar to secondversion. I never heard of secondversion before today so I'm gonna check it out. Mine is less friendly (no templates for example) but tailored to exactly what I want -> categorizing, tagging, searching.

But to answer the question directly, a spreadsheet ought to do nicely. Separate worksheets for different extensions, IDNs etc. One thing I did not hear mentioned - I like to keep comps (sales of same name, different extension for example) in there too.

You may want to consider a simple asset management application.

Domain names are in effect an asset, so those apps would also help you to treat them as such.

Excel is perfect if you deal with offline data
Text and Numeric functions can make your data dance the way you want
A ready made application will be able to present the data in a nice template and not in the "raw" format of Excel but other than that i can't imagine a task Excel is not capable of

Example of remaining expiration days :
You put for example in A2 the domain name, in B2 the expiration day and in C2 the formula = B2-TODAY()
You format the C2 as a 'Number' or 'General' and ... there you go you have an automatic query of the remaining days everytime you open the XLS file with the current day (of your windows settings)

Excel is not recommended if you let others deal with your data
The possibility to mess the cell data is big. Of course you can lock cells, columns but still there is some risk

For me Excel is the best solution. I don't suggest it as an economic solution but as best
However i admit that you may need some time to prepare the data the way you want in Excel

If you want data directly from the web maybe another solution will be better

In this thread several people have used it and placed a link to their portfolios.

True: registrar consolidation makes life much easier

I use Excel and Access, which do wonders by me

Would be great if someone had Access setup for this. I'd sure pay a few bucks for it.
