Online Hunting Sparks Outrage in US

The online hunting game allows people to shoot animals simply by clicking a mouse

A new form of hunting which allows participants to shoot wild boar and antelope by a simple click of the mouse is stirring up great controversy in the United States.

Online hunting has outraged animal rights activists, gun advocates and politicians from 14 states, all trying to get the sport banned.

Participants control a video camera and a gun by remote control, carefully monitoring animals on a remote shooting range via the internet.

A click of the mouse from the comfort of your own armchair can discharge a round of bullets. For extra money, the meat or animal's head can be shipped to your home.

Founders and members of Live-Shot.com insist the practice is ethical, and in particular allows the disabled to experience the thrill of the sport.

But the concept raises several ethical issues and critics have branded it "pay-per-view slaughter".

The first paid-for live shoot is scheduled to take place on Saturday on a Texas ranch, the only online hunting facility in existence. But activists and politicians are racing to get it banned before it can begin.

The website's founder, John Lockwood, claims opponents simply do not understand how the system works and quite how many safety procedures are in place.

"I am in full agreement that there needs to be legislation and regulation controlling it," he said. "But people are under the impression that this is a slaughtering machine and that's not what it is."

Michael Markarian from the Humane Society told the CSM: "Nobody ever said the wilderness had to be ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant."

I find this rather disgusting....

Texas, what more can I say?

thats like asking how you can call any online game such as chess or pool a "skill" game. Your are sitting on the same comfy chair holding the same little mouse. Does that mean it doest take skill to play the game ?

Real life hunting is about 'hunting', therefore, roaming the environment stealthily and trying to get as close to the target as possible. Then you need to know how to hold your gun steadily and aim well.

When you're doing this through a computer all you're doing is the aiming part, but you don't even hold a gun, you don't have to know how to load or reload etc...

Online gaming is completely different, first of all Chess doesn't involve any difference between online and real life, because all you do is sit on a chair and move one hand anyway. Online pool doesn't take much skill, whereas in real life it all depends on how you hold and shoot with the cue, this is completely eliminated online.

Games that involve skill would include Counter Strike or Gran Turismo etc. These games demand speed, accuracy, experience and team-work.

Online hunting involves moving the mouse around the screen and that's about it.

Hmm the only problem I see with this is that I don´t really see the appeal.Isn´t part of the fun in hunting actually tracking down the animal or waiting in the outdoors?
I´m not into hunting or guns in general (but I respect those who do) but I do love to go fishing and part of the appeal for me is to be out in the ocean.I just love the sea :P

If you eat what you hunt I don´t have a problem. What I don´t like to see is trigger happy dolts just shooting everything in sight for the heck of it.

Anyway I´m not so sure this is gonna be such a big hit.

anyone? how about animals? how about nature? This is sick killing for sport, this is why thousands of criminals don't think twice about shooting up a person, cause they have had plenty of practice on innocent animals...

I found it fine that they had it so you could do it to a target. That would be interesting to do target practice on a piece of wood or paper.

But an animal, that is something else all together. If you want to do that, buy a gun, get a license and go hunting yourself.

Hi guys/gals

My husband is a hunter. I am the one who wants to care for critters I find. Strange mix, I know.

But, in saying that, I (of course) completely disagree with the online hunting idea. I feel it is careless, unfeeling, and way too easy. I think if we have millinons of online folks trying this sport out, we will be in big trouble conserevation-wise. Soon, we will be breeding animals specifically to send to this kill-ranch for online thrills and chills. I think it reeks of lack of compassion and a serious lack of respect for the animal. I dont like it at all.

Surprisingly, my husband doesnt either. I asked him about it, expecting a debate and possible argument, but he thinks it completely removes the whole purpose of hunting. Most hunters are aware of the 'need' for hunting more than the thrill of it. The need is to keep the numbers of specific animals in check. That is why they have seasons. There are only so many of each animal allowed to be killed by each hunter and only during the particular season. Also, the whole hunting experience is to be outdoors, hunting, using skills you were taught or learned from your father. You go with food, camping equipment, if necessary, and an expectation that you may just go home with nothing. It is getting in with nature. Being cold, wet, tired, hot .. whatever. On the same level as the animal. Dealing with bugs, and possible predators along side you. Its the whole thing.. all of it. Thats what makes hunting.. HUNTING. When you do it like this site is suggesting.. in your home, between commercials on the TV .. talking on the phone... there is NO SPORT in that. Not for the animal and cerainly not for the hunter.

That from an life-long hunter! If a person is disabled, very sorry for that. But.. deal with the fact that you can't hunt. Dont set animals in front of a machine that does not smell threatening or dangerous, and shoot them like cowards from your home. There is no sport in it. It is cruel. Its not how hunting was meant to be and its not how it should become.

2 opinions from Arkansas.

I hope it is a joke, if it is not a joke it come out from a perverted criminal mind and of course is that target who is actracted.

This is not sport it is just killing, and it is like killing by shooting from behind the shoulders, what's honour, what's courage, what's a man!

Where is the limit then? People like those could go to shoot at children in some remote village or people in the street , maybe just paying for a premium membership, just for their dirty sick fun, is not an exciting idea, eh heroes, isn't ?

Just criminals to me, sick minds. Sub humans, sub-monkey species. :imho:
