How to get started to become Online Business Marketer
Dion,
This are my recommendations (only invest money in #3 and #4):
Print this thread and put it where you can access it.
Go to wikipedia: Search for ecommerce, affiliate marketing, internet marketing. Read the articles, follow the recommended link and references, read those.
Get a domain name.
Get a shared webhosting account where you can host unlimited sites, has PHP, and mySql (if it has an installer like fantastico, it may install blogging software for you). Go for a hosting company that has telephone support (that will guarantee that it is one of the biggest - I believe). I would get a year. Fantastico (or similar) installer is important because it will get you started without having to know much about the process of installing software.
Put google analytics on your site(s), learn about google webmaster tools (sitemap).
Subscribe to RSS feeds and newsletters from affiliate, e-commerce sites/magazines. I use iGoogle.com (as homepage as well) and add the feeds, so that when I open my browser that is the first thing I see. May I suggest the following (I'd like to know of others):
Learn about software, websites, and services that are used for online marketing: eBay (start selling and buying - learn from other sellers), Google Adwords, Gooble Base, Affiliate marketing sites (Commission Junction, Amazon, Linkshare, and another affiliate marketing site with an excellent newsletter: Kolimbo.com)
Learn PHP, mySql, and CSS as you go: Yes, even if you are going to be the "marketing" person, you have to know the tech part of it.
Maybe get a book or two (not the dummy books), read them quick before they become obsolete (if someone knows of a good book please let me know).
Visit this forum frequently, learn from others, ask questions, be open to new concepts.
