Today we should all observe a moment of silence for those who were affected by the " Tragedy of the Groupon" in 2013, which hit some folk pretty hard between the eyes.

Around this time last year, some Godaddy customers who used the "Groupon trick" lost quite a bit.

The last I heard about it was when a few posted that they will be taking it up with Groupon to get a refund. I never got an update on their efforts

I wanted to ask for an update last year, but thought it would be kinda insensitive of me to do so... (Remember how some folk snapped on this forum/ blog comments?)

Before the tragedy had occurred, and when everybody was still getting their "groop on", I inquired over the phone with GD about this fantastic thing they call a "Groupon". The dude said I could only get one. Either a $70 voucher for $25, or a $30 for $10. I visited Groupon.com and got myself a $25 voucher for $70 GD credit. It wasn't much, but hey- I could renew 10 .Nets for $25... That was sweet enough. :loveyou:

Other peeps went overboard, and bought plenty of $10 ($30 GD credit) and $25 ($70 GD credit) Groupon vouchers from various states, and then also using multiple cards whilst doing so..."rinse and repeat" was the order of those days. Later these vouchers were loosely referred to as "Groupons".

Just a few days after this "Groupon" was being abused, GD erased the GD instore credit completely for those who used more than one "Groupon" in their account.

Some claimed that the credit which was used on renewals and some products was not reversed.

For those of you who took part in this glorious Groupon Promotion, where did you stand at this point last year? Were you lucky and got to renew many of your domains fore cheap? Did you lose out? Did you get refunded?

hahaha What a fiasco that was!

I had purchased over $1,000 in account credit for around $350. GoDaddy removed all of the account credit except for the first coupon applied. I was able to get a refund from Groupon for the others, but Groupon also banned me for life.

To this day I hold firm that I did nothing wrong. The coupon for each city had a different Groupon ID at the top, thus making it a different offer. I purchased and applied only one of each offer.

There's one juicy tidbit to this story, but I'm not going to reveal it. I'll save it for the "Five years later" thread after this event has completely blown over.
