TurnCommerce acquired another 299 registrar accreditations from ICANN over Christmas week.
The company, which is behind domain properties including DropCatch.com, now has at least 452 registrars in its stable. That’s over 31% of the 1,456 total currently reported by Internic.
At $4,000 a year for the base accreditation fee, TurnCommerce must be spending close to $2 million a year in ICANN fees alone.
With almost a third of all accredited registrars now operating under the same control, one imagines TurnCommerce’s chances of securing the names it wants have been significantly improved.

Interesting read. I wonder how well they will compete against Snapnames.com who has 119 Registrars soon to be 139. If DropCatch.com can beat them in the drop then we are in. :)

Seems the right moment to get .com accreditation :p
Maybe domainers in NamePros should gather, create a registrar, move all domains there and then sell it in a few months :)

According to the most recent accreditation agreement:
"Registrar shall maintain in force commercial general liability insurance or similar liability insurance as specified by ICANN with policy limits of at least US$500,000 covering liabilities arising from Registrar's registrar business during the Term of this Agreement."

It would be interesting to find out what insurance company would provide such a service (meaning $150,000,000 in potential liability being 300 x US$500,000) for a set of 300 newly-registered companies, and under what legal/financial conditions...
Just a curiosity, since namebright is supposed to give the details to ICANN only, and ICANN does not publish such reports

The best way to run a monopoly, is to run it in an industry or niche that virtually has no regulation or whatsoever.

I always wondered, what if Carlos Slim spent a fraction of his fortune milking it in the Domaining business ??

Or is Carlos Slim already in the Domaining business by funneling his money using Andrew as proxy ?? :D
