Ok, I've screwed up with a GoDaddy domain

I've got this domain registered with godaddy, and I meant to transfer it away from them, so I turned the auto-renewal off 3 months ago - as I know they have a habit of renewing it about a month early. Unfortunately, like the idiot I am, I forgot about it, and only just remembered. It was due for renewal on the 1st of may.

Unfortunately when I log into my account it a appears to have been removed (although it's still about two weeks before deletion). I suspect they're probably trying to auction it. So, can I still get it back? And if so, is it easy to get it back, maybe some menu option lurking somewhere? Or am I going to have to email them, or even phone them up to recover it? And will they try a screw me with some special fee to recover it (I know what godaddy are like at trying to make some side cash)?

Thanks in advance

godaddy are the last 'big name registrars' to trust with a domain name.
Contact them as soon possible.

This is GoDaddy's expiry policy, directly from the Office of the President...

GoDaddy said:
On the expiration date we attempt to renew if the auto-renew is enabled.
We attempt 2 more renewals, on the 5th and 12th day
The name is parked on day 5 to alert the customer
On day 12 if the renewal has not been processed, the name goes into a 30
day redemption period. The name can be renewed at the regular rate up
until the end of day 18.
On day 19 the renewal would also incur the $80.00 redemption fee.
On day 26 the name enters the expired domains auction where it remains
until day 36.
If there are no bids the name goes into the fire sale auction on day 37
where it remains until day 42.
On day 43:
If there is an auction winner the name is awarded to them.
If there is no auction winner, the name goes to a backorder in our
system should one exist.
If there is neither an auction winner or a backorder, the name drops to
the registry for 30 days plus deletion.
Of course, as per our legal agreements these terms are subject to change
at any time.

So it depends exactly how many days have expired. If it's at auction you can bid for it at TDNAM. If it's day 43-73 you can still renew by paying the $80 redemption fee. After day 73 it goes into pending delete. So you can compete with the dropcatchers on day 78/79.

Sounds like you are going to have to pay the redemption fee. Once it is out of your account, expect the redemption fee.

Indeedie. You have 12 days to renew with the Grace Period - after that - $80. Also - is this a .com or .co.uk? .com's dont renew 30 days early - the only auto-renew on their expiration date.

.co.uk's I believe renew 30 days prior, but I believe thats due to the registry.

since you say it was due for renewal on the 1st of May (therefore it expired on the 1st of May) then ...

the domain went to auction on the 26th/27th of May

your options are ...

a. pay the redemption fee ($80) together with the renewal fee if you must renew the domain for certain (at extra cost as you understand)

b. bid for it on TDNAM auction , though as you understand there is the possibility that you might lose the auction to someone else

c. if you don't see anyone bidding and want to risk it (eg. that noone will bid for it in the last minute) then you can wait for it to go to firesale after the end of the auction (if the auction does not have any bids)

alternatively , if it does not get bids on the auction or sold on firesale , you can wait another 30 days for it to drop and try to backorder it (where there will be an auction if someone else also backorders it)

the "lurking" menu option you are possibly talking about is for domains after the 12th day and before the 18th of expiration that while the domain appears in the account but you cannot renew there , you can hover over "Domains" in the front page and click "Renew Domains" ... in the Renew Panel you can renew a domain until the 18th day

Spade- you can still renew for renewal fee (without redemption fee) untill the 18th not the 12th ... you just have to go through the Renew Panel (see above paragraph) instead of the Domain Control Panel

but if it is not in the Domain Control Panel (either renewable there -1st to 12th- or not renewable there -13th to 18th-) that means that it is after the 18th (and needss redemption fee)

Thanks for the info guys.

It was of debatable value anyway, so I'd have no intention of paying $80 to recover it, as I have my doubts it's worth $80 (I wouldn't have been so careless with it, if I'd thought it was worth alot).

That said, it's still just within the 40 days (42 days?) after the expiry date, and godaddy had removed it from my account after about only 20 days after expiry. I'd question whether godaddy have the right to withdraw my ability to renew a domain if it's still within the 40 days after the renewal date. I'm half tempted to fire off an email to ICANN to question whether Godaddy should be doing this.

Guess it serves me right for getting involved with Godaddy, as I know what a bunch of clowns they are (the reason, ironically, why I meant to transfer it away, which got me in this mess).

This isn't really a Go Daddy issue. The path followed here is pretty much the standard ICANN deletion path. Some registrars do allow renewal up to nearly the last moment but most don't as in allowing regsitrars the right to sell their expired domains, ICANN pretty much turned them into expired domain sales mills so most are more like Go Daddy's 18 days so they have time to sell them. Registrars also have the right to plaster PPC advertising all over your names for their sole benefit if you don't move them to your servers but that's another story and another wonderful ICANN decision.

As to fees, $80 is low. Others are $99 to $160 and possibly more. A sizable part of that $80 does go to the registry.

This is not exactly correct, Justin. Their ToS says 12 days but actually the domain stays in your account for 18 days. You can renew at regular rates whilst the domain is in your account. It then goes to TDNAM after about 5 days. I've been able to renew domains which have been taken out of my account but not yet on TDNAM, for a $10 Redemption Fee plus Renewal Fee. (I don't know if this is a special priviledge only extended to clients with account managers or not). However once it goes to TDNAM the Redemption Fee is $80 plus Renewal Fee right up to the time the domain enters Pending Delete.
