Hey guys,

I recently decided to register a domain regarding the recent Oil Spill in the Gulf. I wanted a domain I could develop and I found that .TV was just the right fit. ;)

I have created a small site with up to date information, as we as a Live Cam of the Oil spill. There is also a video about the spill from NASA and new videos from YouTube.

Check it out and let me know what you guys think. The site just went live a few hours ago.

OilSpills.TV - Your source for up to date information on the Gulf Oil Spill.

Thanks!

Mike

What the hell... The most recent blog post by Rick Schwartz himself is how he's making money of TM tragedy domains....

The Rick Schwartz Domain and Traffic Blog RicksBlog.com...Home of the "Domain King": No more Type in Domains?? Oh Really??? NONSENSE! Only Pigeons Believe!

If anyone seriously wonders why our industry is viewed as being populated by bottom-feeding scum, consider that it's self-proclaimed 'king' is promoting such bullshit.

(Hi Rick! since I know you'll be tracking back to this post from your inbound logs...)

True.

Mike,

I like you.

and that is a cool looking site,
but the whole idea just kinda sucks for me.

I am not sure how this could be doing any good for anyone except you,
and that is the problem.

Use your talents and energy on some of your better .TV's. IMHO

Take Care,
Vito

Everyone is affected by this disaster. This site is intended to be a place people can get information without having to search multiple sites. It will also bring attention to the .TV extension if it becomes popular. Yes, there are adsense ads on it, but my focus when building this was not revenue. You have my intentions mixed up.

Bullshit.
Then take the adsense ads down.

Adsense ads are already down and will be replaced by link to donate to GNOF.

Jaco, I appreciate your post and honesty with your thoughts - it is what I ask for in every post I make. But DO NOT label me as "bottom-feeding scum" unless you know my full intentions. I am not one of those that purposely intend to benefit from the misfortune of other people.

I have not developed Haitian.TV because I have not been able to dedicate the time to properly develop it into a site that has a use and will help the people of Haiti. I am one of those people that applied to GVN, American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity and about 10 other Non-Profits a week after the earthquake to donate my time. I tried to visit Haiti on my own time and funds. I could not go because they were only accepting doctors, nurses, etc at the time.

I am disgusted by this oil spill and that's why I made the decision to build this site. I agree, adsense ads are not necessary and have been taken down.

But, DO NOT label me as something that I am not.

Mike.

OK, good. The adsense ads are down. If you're doing this as an information portal, that's fine, but profiting from this is not OK, in my opinion.

I scrimped, saved and sacrificed in a big, big way to purchase what is to become my eventual retirement property on Floridas gulf coast. Right now, reports have it that the direct impact from the spill won't be immediate in my area, however, the ancillary impact (globules of oil washing up in random places on the coast) may take a considerable amount of time to abate and will be very gross...

To think that there are domainers out there who are making nickles and dimes off people seeking legitimate information on the oil spill disgusts me to the pit of my stomach.

Mike,

re-read Jaco's post.

He is talking about the #1 Domainer in the Biz.

Hey, There is an easy way to get attention on the net, and there is a hard way. Usually the tragedy's are an easy no-brainer way to get traffic. That is not cool if you are just profitting on that current disaster.

Now, lets say, red Cross, or BP created that site and promoted their relief efforts, that is one thing, but you or me doing so...who the hell is gonna believe we have the best of intentions.

For you to honestly give that site a "good name" it would require a TON of work...lots of articles, and charity links, et....and NO AD'S. LOL

I could easily create a visual tv site on school shootings, or drive by shootings here in Chicago, I could be on location, and get a million hits. But If I know I am profitting off of someone elses mis-fortunes, I can't sleep at night.

I just bought BiPolar and wanted to do something comical on that site, like a good and evil news, then tie it in to LOL one day and even then, I am thinking, would people that actually have bipolar disease take offense...I dont know, all I know is there are way too many domainers that we have to look at everyday, annd say, wtf???

I know your intentions are good but that is a sensitive subject, and requires a lot more thought than a satellite view of that trragedy, and a coupla rss feeds, and ad's, ya know?

If it is a new reg, I would grace delete it personally.
or spend a helluva lot more time on making it a VERY helpful site in some way...All IMHO.

Take Care,
Vito

My original post was not meant to be judgmental as such.

I understand business is business.

I went to the site and saw lots of ads and while the site could still be useful it is not something I am interested in. That said, even with the ads I didn't consider this an egregious violation of ethics.

I'm just touchy on this because it's impacting an area of supreme wildlife that I really love.

Rick Schwartz though is a dick. Excuse my english.

Jaco,

Excellent Post.
and I am sorry about your land.
I hope they come up with a solution and it does NOT affect the coast line.

Mike,
That oil spill affected me too in a HUGE way.

I was suppose to be at a MONSTROUS Constrution job at BP in Hammond right now. Well, that job had just began previous to this tragic spill and it came to a screeching halt and I can't because of this tragedy. Thousands of Chicago tradesmen were going to be able to feed their kids, and pay their bills, keep their houses by woorking there at BP, well now travelling away from them is more or less the only options left.

This is a VERY VERY bad thing here and affects each and every one of us in one way or another...as you can see, it affected Jaco and myself in a HUGE way very personally.

Ironically enough, I have friends on the SE side of Chicago, just across the border from the BP plant in Whiting. You are dead on the money that the tradesmen in this area area suffering greatly. In addition to the remaining steel mills drawing down, the Ford plant cut back to one shift and any number of framers, pipe fitters, welders, electricians, machinists, etc have been laid off for a long, long time. Prospective employment at the BP refinery was a bright spot.

It's just terrible to hear that BP Whiting projects might get shelved because of this. The SE Side of Chicago and NW Indiana is suffering a lot and frankly, on the brink of ghettoization. Whiting is at risk of 'turning the corner', Chicago community areas like East Side, South Chicago, Hegewisch, Burnham, Cal City and Hammond in Indiana already have gone off the cliff, for the most part.

Slashing well paying industrial jobs will only accelerate the process of decline. Watching domainers make pennies and nickles off the process is grotesque.

I appreciate all your posts and sincerity and agree I went about this site in the wrong way. Good intentions or not, you make a valid point Vito. While I am not from the East coast and my physical property has not been affected, I know many people who have had this happen. I am a big animal person and I enjoy helping marine mammals, etc... What this oil spill is doing to our ecosystem is sickening and all the wildlife that are perishing because of man made greed is unfortunate.

The sites ads have been removed and will be replaced with donation links. Hopefully this site can benefit those in need.

I apologize if I gave the wrong impression and offended anyone, it is not in my nature and was not my intent.

Hopefully today you will be seeing that leak stop on the live cam. :)

Topkill failed. I don't think, in spite of the media attention, people really understand the gravity of the situation. This is going to devastate areas and small businesses.

My opinion of you hasn't changed. I don't know you but you still seem like a decent person so I wouldn't worry over this. :hearts:
