I just saw a commercial on TV in the US for StopTheBeetle.info . This is the first .info commercial I've seen. It was only a PBS affiliate station so it wasn't a $2 Million Superbowl commercial or anything, but still interesting enough.

Has anyone seen another .info in a commercial?

Well I see commercials all the time for a local rather large hospital and they are located here: Home - St. Bernards HealthCare

So yeah there are plenty of other commercials and companies etc using the .info extension.

JacksonvilleResorts.info
WindowSales.info
MuseumofNaturalHistory.info
MyOlympia.info
IncredibleHulk.info
JackNicholson.info
MarketPredictions.info
LendingAgents.info

Several more. Seem to gaining popularity and they make perfect niche content sites if the TLD fits the content (not all mine do, either). Happy Holidays.

.info celebrity or athlete names

To some of the more experienced domainers on today....First, Happy Holidays.

My question is about some deceased athlete/common name celeb sites I purchased, all .info TLD. I did little research before buying, and it appeared that taking a celeb .com is a trademark issue. In cases where another TLD was purchased and the site was used in a positive way (fan site, etc), it appeared that purchasing a celeb name TLD wasn't a violation of domaining rules/tm. I had purchased a few celeb.infos to make into mini-sites, and some to potentially market...now Im not sure what to do.

Here's the celeb one:
Jacknicholson.info - Jack Nicholson Resources and Information. This website is for sale!

And the deceased athlete names:

SamSnead.info
DonDrysdale.info
GeorgeMikan.info
SatchellPaige.info
JoshGibson.info
BobFeller.info
BronkoNagurski.info
RedGrange.info

And lastly, I had two political names, which I believed to be above the "celeb name" dispute:

PresidentNixon.info
PresidentCarter.info

Im tempted to dump them all for $2-$10....thanks for whatever feedback this generates. Enjoy the holidays!

Trademark issues don't turn on TLD if there are issues in .com then those same issues apply equally to .info .biz .mobi etc. Trademarks usally don't include the extension and UDRP looks specifically at the mark without the extension.

The best way to determine there are no issues is to approach the Trademark holder and ask if they are happy with your plans for the site.

If it is a pure fan site which is a resource and doesn't generate revenue then they are more likely to approve of your sites. If you are making money from their mark through selling goods or advertising you are treading on very dangerous ground, if they take legal action against you it could get very expensive.

Thank you for the advice. Here's what I was thinking (hope this doesnt sound shifty-Im just being honest....): I was going to create mutiple fan/info sites and instead of AdSense or another CPC/ad revenue concept, was just going to create backlinks to my traffic worthy sites and try to capture some of the residual traffic. The rules about celeb names are pretty tough to figure out for newbies like me-am I correct that political figures do not have the same rights about their "name" domains? And what about people that passed away long ago? I thought I could put up a very good Satchell Paige and Josh Gibson site, and while the subject matter would oubviously be positive/fan based, i did plan to use Adsense on those sites. Bad idea? If the celeb died in 1960, how could I be treading on his domain rights? Anyway, thank you for your help and Happy Holidays. Leaving you a positive for taking the time to help me.

Trademark law is complicated and varies by jurisdiction you need to talk to a lawyer that covers your jurisdiction to be sure.

In reality it depends on the celebrity and what they want / don't want, some want to control everything some don't care and some want as much to be written about them as possible. So some will go after everything they can some will go after nothing and some will go after a the most blatant.

Residual traffic is interesting there have been cases where lawyers try and claim infringement of their clients rights, but many cases seem to evolve around affiliate links, adverts, merchandising and negative sites.

The property and intellectual property rights of people who have died pass to their heirs. Everybody has common law rights to any goods and services they offer however the less well known the person or product is the harder it is likely to be to defend your mark.

Seriously, I've never come across .info that actually rank well in search engines. Well, previously I did consider with some projects in the pipeline about using a .info but after reading through comments in the web about how google will just sideline the tld, I just drop the plan.

Any .info worth mentioning here that actually rank well for fairly a competitive keyword?

Google has said many times they don't discriminate/weight by gTLD .com .org .info .biz all rank equally. If you think about it would be a crazy thing to do. With all their Phd's I think they might be able to find better things that make a site good or bad other than TLD :)

There are now over 1,000,000 unique .info sites, its the 7th largest TLD in the world and has around 5.5 million registrations with over 70% of .infos resolving to real content.

According to the 2009 Annual report http://www.info.info/webfm_send/98
