Novice needs website development advice

Hello everyone.

I am thinking about developing some of my domains into small websites to start with. But the I have no development experience. My website has been developed by a friend but I want to start doing this myself now.

But I have a full time job and only limited time available.

So what would be the advise for me? Download an opensource CMS like Mambo or Typo and start using and do like trial and error or paying someone to do the development with my input?

This a very important decision for me and I would like to hear Namepros members opinion.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Fabian

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

time is the most important investment you can give your web site. paying an expert won't hurt your pocket in the long term that will report to you directly via email or im and then you give him instructions and he does it for you is the better choice for me.

I think it depends on what types of sites you want to develop. Blogs or content sites would take less time and would be easier to manage than lets say a forum. As far as blog software give Word Press a look. It is very user friendly and the best part is that its free.

If you are starting to develop your own sites, please do not use Joomla! or anything graphical. Nobody quite honestly takes those sites seroiusly. It is only good for groups or for people who can't hard code

Agreed. The most successful sites run on custom code and after the code has been developed, time required to add content is dramatically reduced.

Site creators

Hi everyone.

Thanks for the feedback so far, keep it coming.

One other question: What do you think for the site creator templates from registrars for 19.95 for example, and other?

Could you recommend them or is this not useful?

Cheers.

I think templates are ok but make sure they are not 100% graphic or flash. Search engines can not read what graphics say so make sure your titles, headers, and important information are pure text. I would recommend a simple clean template.

Domain sale templates

Thanks everyone so far. Really good advice.

Please keep it coming.

One more question: I have the domain: www.domain-agent.com and I am thinking of using a template for domain sale sites to develop this one.

Do you know any templates for domain sale sites?

Cheers,

Don't get a template. Get one custom made on the forum if anything.
